Worried about my twin pregnancy...

Hi all,

I have also posted on the twin club antenatal thread, but wondered if people here could help me too...
I am 13 weeks pg with (probably) DCDA twins. I have a 13 month old DD. I am really worried about something going wrong in the pregnancy or delivery of the babies, and waould like some other people's experiences.

This is nothelped as the hospital trust we have to use has a Red Alert for poor maternity services. They HAVE to make improvements by next year, but that doesn't help me now!!! One example is they can't offer any antenatal screening, like Nuchal Fold Scanning, and as a blood test for DCDA is no use alone, I can't check out any Downs risk, which I know is higher with twins.

I would like to know what number of scans people have had and when, and when the heartbeats were first listened to. I am not having a mw appointment for this at 16 weeks as she said you can't do it with twins as you can't tell them apart then so no point. I'm very disappointed, as I'd just love to know both are still doing ok. As I also can't have a nuchal fold scan, there's nothing til 20 weeks.

I am a worrier, but I just want to check this matches other people's experiences?!

I will worry about 3 children under 18 or 19 months closer to the time!!!!!

You are not mad! Twins are amazing BUT when everyone keeps going on about high risk pregnancy you can't help but be anxious. Hope you get the scan. I had a huge bleed at 8 weeks and the babies were fine - as others have said the symptoms are stronger with two. Best of luck next week.

Thanks DW123. Everyone has been so lovely on here, I feel quite emotional!

I went to the GP today after more stabbing type pains. I ended up on the gynae ward. Much hanging about, to DDs displeasure, but finally got scanned at 4:30, and they also scanned my left kidney. Both babies were fine, measuring 14+5 and 14+6 (I'm officially 14+4) so sonographer was pleased with that, said the fluid round both was pretty equal, they were super wriggly, and my kidney seemed fine, no cysts anywhere, cervix closed and fine. So pain unexplained, but I'm feeling so much better and so happy. I sobbed cried at seeing both heartbeats on the scan... The sonographer has probably seen it all before but I felt a bit silly... He was lovely though- and I feel so much better, like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders Grin

Hooray for healthy looking twins!!

Hi, me and my partners of 4 years are 22 weeks with MCDA twins and only found out at 16 weeks (how I didn't know still gets me!) Since 16 weeks, I have 5 scans which have all come back normal, and 2 consultant appointments. I missed the screening time at 12 weeks which was a worry but seeing as it all seems pretty normal (apart from there being two) I figured I should just relax! Although entirely unplanned (I can even pin-point the conception when we thought "No Condom, what are the odds?") I guess these things happen and its a blessing!
Its difficult not to worry however when you are constantly called a "high risk" pregnancy, and I have found that everyone you talk to will try to scare you with stories or C-sections and sleepless nights. I've also found it difficult to speak to my midwife as she has only had one case of twins before and admitted that she isn't quite sure what advice to give me.
Still, women have been having babies since time began, and a fair amount of those had twins too! My Grandma had twins at home by herself when no tests were on offer- what a shock it must have been when two came out.
So Dreamfeeder, I think we'll be alright! Im sorry that your NHS services are so poor where you are- if I think about the amount of tax and NI garnished from my wages each month, if fills me with rage to think that the service you're getting is so poor, especially as we pay so much for it.
Hearing the heart beats must have put your mind at ease. If it makes you feel better, I complained to my Consultant about pains during my pregnancy and he just laughed me off saying "Yeah, you are having Twins- its a tight squeeze."

Good Luck! :)

wow, didn't know you were pg at all oroski??! I'm big now at 16 weeks tomorrow!!! and was very, very sick. Still, I'd say the big bonus is skipping through some of the nerve-wracking early bits... I couldn't have any screening as they can't offer nuchal fold scanning so that's it out anyway. I wouldn't worry- it wold only matter if you would abort the pregnancy anyway, otherwise it's just nice to know to be prepared for some people. I couldn't, I feel so attached to these babies already, so I'm just not worrying about that.

I'm glad everyone does seem to say it is much more painful with twins. Had a little spotting, and more cramping over the last few days, and am generally stillridiculously nervous about anything going wrong. There's nothing i want more than 2 healthy babies!!! My midwife had 2 sections and said the recovery was fine- and thats from an old-school die-hard natural birth midwife. She doesn't want to see me at all though. I wish I could get the 'women have had babies, and twins from the beginning of time but far worse maternal and infant mortality' part out of my head!!!!! I'm an idiot, there's no hope
