Fortnightly bin collections - nappies for twins

Of all of the things to worry abut at 27 weeks pregnant, this probably isn't top of my list, but I can't help wondering Grin

Is the fashion Hmm for fortnightly bin collections a problem when your bin is full of nappies from twins? That's about 200 nappies I think between collections.

Can the council be persuaded to come any more often?! Grin

If you have a larger family you can request another bin. Ask the council for their advice, it will be on their website.

Your bin will be very heavy.

You could try this company

My council does a larger bin for people with two in nappies. You just have to apply for it

tartiflette · 27/04/2011 19:53

We had a delightful situation over Christmas where the bins weren't taken away for four weeks because of the bad weather... oh my dear sweet lord that was bad.

PrincessScrumpy · 29/04/2011 20:55

A friend of mine has twins and a 2-year-old. The neighbours complained to the council about the nappies in bin liners next to their bin so the council gave them a second bin - fine so long as you can store the bin. I'm guessing I'll need to go down this route - I didn't get on with washables at all with dd1 so can't do that.

LargeGlassofRed · 29/04/2011 21:02

I have 5 dc's with twins in nappies, we can't get an extra bin, drives me mad. Really think bins should be based on number of people in house and number in nappies.

harrygracejessica · 29/04/2011 23:08

We got a bigger green and black bin due to having 2 or more in nappies - we have 2 sets of twins in nappies so plenty lol

virginiasmonalogue · 29/04/2011 23:11

Have you looked into re-useables? I have had 2 in them at a time and honestly, when you're in the swing of it, it's really no more bother.

superbean · 03/05/2011 15:24

Ask the council for another bin. They were really helpful, just mutter something about getting through 100+ nappies a week and how you are concerned that leaving them out in hot weather for 2 weeks would be a health hazard....

BrassicaBabe · 03/05/2011 20:28

Thanks guys. I'll see what the council says about a bigger/extra bin.

Points noted about the re-useable. Sorry, I'm just not brave enough! Blush

You don't need to be brave for washables, they're dead easy! Tbh though both of mine were in Pampers New Baby to begin with, until they outgrew those and then we went onto the washables. So many different types, maybe try something different than those you didn't get on with for your elder child?

Or just call the council for a bigger bin.

weebleswobblebutidontfalldown · 09/05/2011 14:26

Really? An extra bin just for nappies? I had twins and toddler in nappies and never had more rubbish than the bin would hold! I do recycle but not obsessive about it, bin is full on bin day but not overflowing.

Maybe I just didn't change them enough?! Grin

MamaChocoholic · 13/05/2011 15:38

I am miserly with nappies. 3 per day, extra in case of poo. (change morning, lunchtime, bedtime). and we mix nappy, using washables in the daytime. so 28 nappies/bin (fortnightly here too). even if they were all disposables, it wouldn't top 100. how do you get to 200?

thisisyesterday · 13/05/2011 15:42

you can either contact council and see if you can have another bin

or, use washable nappies, they're easier than you might think, and even if you only used them "part time" it would save you money and bin space

or, take any excess to your local dump yourself

thisisyesterday · 13/05/2011 15:43

mamachocoholic, i think for newborns you would get through a lot of nappies. mine did that annoying "poo after every feed" thing, and i think on average got through about 6-8 nappies a day. times it by 2.... then for 2 weeks...

MamaChocoholic · 13/05/2011 19:01

ah, mine used to save their poo for days at a time. must be skinflints like me Grin still, newborn nappies are tiny, and this phase will soon pass :tries to reassure OP:

greenlime · 13/05/2011 19:04

Personally, I would be bagging up nappies and putting them in a public bin. I think this is OK?

AlfalfaMum · 13/05/2011 19:05

I'm laughing at skinflint babies :o

When I had two in nappies I used washables in the day, and a disposable nappy each at night. Saved a fortune, and kept our consumption and waste down.

Egg · 19/05/2011 14:25

I remember calling the council (Hampshire) when my twins were little as I had DS1 as well who was not quite two so three lots of nappies and overflowing bins. They said we would either need to have another child or take in a lodger to get an extra bin as they only gave two bins to households of more than six people...

Thankfully our lovely neighbours said we could use any space they had left in their bin each fortnight (they are retired couple with no children at home) so we got by. I found the council v unhelpful.

ILoveDrKarl · 20/05/2011 12:49

We're in Aberdeenshire and there are 3 ways to get an extra bin...
More than 2 children in nappies. (we have 9m DTs and a 3 year old DD who is still in pull-ups at night which apparently counts!)
6 or more in the household. (we also have a DS so we are 6 altogether)
Medical waste. (DTs are on Neocate which comes in ridiculously small tins which can't be recycled by our crappy and very fussy recylcling plant so that counts)

I called the council when the DTs were born and they told me we would need a home visit to check out whether we were entitled to a 2nd bin. It took about 3 months for them to get around to the home visit, but they eventually did it and we got our 2nd bin. It's a small "OAP size" one so not another full-sized one.

We obviously fitted all 3 criteria, but you only actually have to fit 1 to get it - it is at the discretion of the refuse and recycling officer who comes to visit though!

We tend to find we often have space in one of the bins at the end of the fortnight, but not alot and we wouldn't get by without the extra one. (well, we would, but we'd be doing weekly trips to the dump)

It's worth checking with your council to see what their policy is.
