flying at 26-27 weeks

I am going to Spain in the summer flying at 26+1 and returning at 27+1. It's a holiday with another family plus ours (me, dh and ds aged 4). I am expecting twins and asked before booking when the latest I could fly to was and the midwife thought the earliest I'd be prevented was 30 weeks. I have checked out insurance and found one who will cover pre-existing medical conditions (which I need as well).

Has anyone else done anything similar?

I figure if events at the time mean I can't travel I'll send dh and ds to hopefully have a nice week and I will go and crash at my parents or something similar. But I'd really like to go on this holiday if possible.

Hi tiggers. Congratulations on your twin pregnancy!
I flew long haul (8hrs) at 22 weeks and domestic (1hr) at 28/29 weeks. I'm pregnant with DCDA twins, but otherwise I am healthy and have no complicating factors.

The L/H flight at 22 weeks was ok, I drank loads of water and made sure I moved about quite a bit. I remember feeling a bit dizzy on arrival, but I was soon back to normal. I didn't need a Dr's note (BA).

Flying at 29 weeks - even for an hour - was quite hard work. In the past couple of weeks I have developed SPD (seems to be more common in multiple pregnancies) and just walking to and from the gates was painful and tiring. Again, I kept a bottle of water and sugary snacks with me all the time. The flight home was in the afternoon and this was much easier than the early morning flight we took on the way out (I'm guessing due to blood pressure/sugar levels). I did need a note from the MW: I was asked if I had one, but no-one actually looked at it.

My MW advised I could fly for less than 4 hours (assuming no other complications) up to about 32 weeks. Not sure I'd want to go after that point anyway! I had my mat notes in my hand luggage and specifically called the insurance co to check I was covered.

Not sure if any of this is helpful! You say you're flying in the summer - is it possible to wait until you're a bit further along to see how you feel? Also each airline has its own guidance on flying pregnant women, I think some of them specifically mention their policy on multiples (I called both airlines but didn't mention that I was expecting twins...)

FWIW I really enjoyed both holidays, and - for me - the flights were worth it! Probably the last for a little while.....

Thanks - it'll be just under 3 hours and I have type 1 diabetes but also DCDA twins. I was told by a mw that the earliest lines banned you with twins was 30 weeks and I have found insurance up to 32+6 so should be ok. I've decided just to take it as easy as possible and if it's not possible to go dh and ds will just have to go without me. We're going with friends so it should still be fun for them/not too much for dh.

I flew with Virgin Atlantic at 27/28 weeks. 8hr flight. I needed to have a letter from my Dr with me for 28 weeks+ saying the pregnancy was "uncomplicated" and confirming due date. I believe they want you to submit a form in advance now. Airlines all have their own policies so check directly with whoever you're flying with.

To be honest I found the flight easier than a long car journey. Made sure I had water and snacks, and I went for short walks every hour. It was quite restful.

Hi! I don't know about that....I travelled from Souh Africa to Singapore when I was 19 weeks pregnant and even so I needed a doctor's letter. I only flew because I was flying business. There was no way I would fly for so many hours on economy....
Anyway, I think you need to bear In mind that twin pregnancies are not like regular ones. So you do need to be prepared for when things don't go according to your original plan. For example, I was put in strict bed rest when I was 25 weeks pregnant and in the bed I stayed until my boys were born at 35+4. My DH has to finish organizing the babies bedroom and everything else...I could only supervise from the bed or couch!
