I found out that we were expecting twins, with seperate placentas, at my 12 wk scan - which dated me at 13+5.

I've got a consultant's appt next Friday, when I will be 18+1, and it's my first appt with anyone since my 12 wk scan.

Can anyone tell me what I might expect at that appt?

Will I get a scan or will they wait until I'm 20 wks?

What else might they go through?

I'm expecting identical twins so it's slightly different - we have had scans and consultant appointments every 2 weeks since 16 weeks (i'm 31 + 3 now). At our consultant appointments he just takes my blood pressure, tests my urnine and listens for the babies heart beats. They have also talked to us/scared us half to death about the possible complications with an identical twin pregnancy (which will be different to you) and what to expect in the next few months or so and possible method of delivery (most twins are delivered by 37 weeks by c section or induction). He also looks at the scan report to check all is progressing well. I hope this helps but as i said it will be different for you as your twins have 2 placentas.

I had twins with seperate placentas. When I found out at my 12 week scan they said that I would be under consultant care, so I never saw my community midwife and had all my antenatal appointments at the hospital. However although I was consulatant care I only saw the consultant once. The rest of the time I just saw midwives at the hospital.

My appointment schedule was

12 week scan
13 week nuchal fold scan
20 week anomolies scan and midwife appt

by this time I was a bit Hmm as I'd actually has less appointments than most people with one baby as they get a 16week check as well.

Then 24 week appt with midwife and saw a registrar (doctor - not head honcho consultant) for 2 minutes as I had reported palpations.

28week scan and midwife
32week scan and midwife apparently consultant appt to discuss c-section but he was too busy so just saw midwife
34week scan and midwife - only got scan as I was upset at lack to care
36 week scan and midwife

At the time I felt pretty neglected (pregnancy hormones) cause although I was getting lots of scans to check the babies growth I was only seeing a midwife every 4 weeks. However with hindsight I was probably seen enough and I was blessed with a very easy pregnancy.

After giving birth I spent a little time in SCBU and there met a mother who had had identical twins and had TTTs with her shared placenta. She unfortunately lost one of her twins. She saw the consulatant weekly. Made me realise that my strops about not seeing the consultant were pathetic and he had much more necessary people to see.

So not sure what your 18 week appt will hold as it varies between hospitals, but you will get lots of scans throughout your pregnancy, and you will see the consultant if you need to.

Hi I'm 28 weeks pg with separate sac & placenta twins.
I've had appointments every 4 wks since finding out at 12 weeks.
Each time it's been scan, blood pressure, urine test, long wait in antenatal clinic then 2 minutes with a registrar who says eveything is fine so far see you next time.

They don't want to talk about delivery yet, but are just keeping a watching brief. It's all been fine, but I wish I saw a midwife too so I could ask about the little niggles as well as the major stuff - if you feel the same you could see if your community midwife would have a chat with you.

Thanks all - it seems to vary so much from area to area.

I'll jsut have to wait and see, and yes, if I don't get a chance to talk through the little niggles properly then I'll make an appt with the midwife.

Thanks againSmile

Oooh, I'm going to watch this thread - I had one scan at 6 weeks which was inconclusive and said I was only 4 weeks gone - a week later scan showed 2 babies in one sac at 7 weeks (which tied in with my dates. The scans were due to cramping - probably body making space quickly for 2. My next scan is the standard 12 week one. I was told to call mw and let her know. I left a message it was twins but haven't heard anything so I assume I go to the scan then see mw at 16 weeks as she told me at booking appointment - is this normal?

At my 12 wk scan, once they confirmed it was twins, we saw a midwife there and then.

She discussed nuchal fold tests etc, and they booked us in with a consultant.

As we were seeing the consultant instead at around the 16 wk mark, there was no need to make an appt to see the midwife too.

Best of luck at your scan - how exciting!
