Left-Handedness in twins...

I've read that although less than 10% of the "normal" population are left handed, in twins the figure is more like 20%...

Just wondered what the split is with all you other mums of multiples... and who was born first?

I'm left-handed (and not a twin) and my 7 yr old twins are one of each...

dd (born first naturally) Left-handed
ds (second by c-section) Right-handed

Just thought a little survey might be nice, if you get a moment all you mums of twins out there...

A high number of scans cause left handedness???? If this were the case surely cases of lefthandedness would have increased to at at least 50% of all babies???

Rubbish theory imho...

meant to say more lefthanders would surely have been born since scans became more commonplace...

can't seem to construct sentences - better get to bed!

Bundle you might have something there, I work in a university for architects and most of the lecturers are left handed as are the majority of students.....

I have id boys - one defintely right handed (first born), the other I think is tending towards lefthandedness. Both parents right handers, but left handedness in aunts and uncles and grandparents and great grand parents.

TwolfBySea - why are you so sure they are not identical ?

charellie · 17/11/2005 08:25

I have non identical twin girls who are both right handed and would born by caesarean. I was told the same about the scans. Due to the increased number of scans during a twin pregnancy it increases the chance of left handedness.

I'm left handed and although not a twin, My mum suspects I was. My mum miscarried a baby early on into the pregnancy when she thought she only had one baby, then discovered she was expecting me and I was born 1 month early for the hospital dates, but roughly on time for the miscarried baby's dates.. So I dunno what happened there LOL but it sounds plausable?

There is a theory that all left handed people are surving twins.

Milge · 17/11/2005 22:35

One of my friends is a surviving twin and is a leftie. My mum is a surviving twin and is right handed.

Prettybird · 17/11/2005 22:49

My dh is a surviving, probably identical twin and is left handed (suspect his twin died in utero of twin to twin transfusion - hence was identical).

I'm also left handed - but as far as I am aware, I was always a singleton. My Mum is also left handed - as was either her father or her grandfather.

Ds is right handed.

jambuttie · 17/11/2005 22:54

one of my twins currenty uses his left hand more. we both keep watching him now to see what he does

singaporesling · 27/11/2005 06:14

I have 2.5 yr old fraternal boys. No lefties in the immediate family (paternal grandfather is probably a lefty tho). DS1 is a lefty but kicks with right foot, DS2 is a righty but kicks with left foot.

HellyBelly · 27/11/2005 10:47

I'm not a mum of twins but dh (44) is an identical twin. Both born normal way. He believes his mum is right handed and his dad is left handed.

DH's brother out first - right handed
DH out second - left handed (but can also do many things with his right hand, no problem)

aloha - interesting thing you put about left handedness, without going into details, I can relate all those associations with my dh! (having said that, the first 2 could have a lot to do with his terrible upbringing?)

As for high number of scans, this was over 40 years ago for dh!

AndreaP · 27/11/2005 17:26

re - scans. Perhaps there are more left-handed people around now if several scans could cause it. One daughter is left-handed and I hope this was due to genes and not scans as I had about 20. I have just read about some research re scans, so perhaps the theory isnt rubbish !!?? Have a look www.mercola.com/2001/dec/19/ultrasound.htm
