Twins speech delay?

I have twin boys who are nearly 21 months and have suddenly realised that DT2 is perhaps not developing as he should. A big part of that is his total lack of words - and a general disinterest in communicating.

I think part of the reason I've ignored this is that I have always expected the boys to talk later as "twins talk later". They were also 8 weeks premature so I'm accustomed to a bit of flexibility in their milestones.

So do twins really talk later? His brother has only really started with words in the last 6 weeks - 2 months, but he is now picking up new ones all the time and mimicking word patterns if he can't manage the actual word.

Obviously would like to hear this is completey normal - but any experiences which suggest I should start panicking (more) would also be appreciated.

My non-twin son was a late speaker and now we cannot shut him and his complicated questions up (4.5 yrs). I do believe that when there are twins (there are twins in my family) you often get one who is just going to be more verbal than the other and this could well be the case. Give them some time, they're still very small - and if they have not developed their own version of a language unto themselves, then you're probably ok - I believe its often harder to break into that and get them speaking along with everyone else, than anything. My twin girls are a tiny bit ahead on speech in relation to milestones, so I thought twins often encouraged each other to speak.

However, my brother's non-twin son, like anonymosity's, didn't start talking till late (after two years). He's just turned 4 and you can't shut him up now Grin.

From all that I've heard from other parents speech seems to be something that there is a lot of variation in and I think a lot of people get anxious about it. I find with twins it's easy to get worried over milestones that you wouldn't notice if there was no comparison sitting right there beside them. And I think it's easier to see one as "behind" than the other as "ahead".

But I also understand speech is also one of the areas where good early intervention when there is a problem can make a big difference. If you're still concerned I would get a professional evaluation (see your GP I guess? Maybe HV). But I don't think you should panic.

My twin boys are 26 months. Twin 1 has met his milestones early while his brother seems to be delayed. He is very babyish compared to his brother. He has some words, but not many and isn't really progressing. I asked the health visitor to do a development check. She did, and she's referred him for a hearing test and speech therapy. It's hard not to worry when there seems to be such a big difference in their development.

my girl twins are 2.5 and have only about 3 words. Have spoken to the health visitor but am trying not to be too concerned as they are very quick on the uptake, sociable, imaginative play etc. They also point and geticulate to be understood, and also will go and carry out quite complex instructions, so no gap in understanding. They were early walkers, at 12 months, even though they wee 2 months premature, so am keeping my fingers crossed.

mine are 37 months old, born at 37 weeks and have 3 languages to learn and they are little chatter boxes. started talking in full sentences around 25-26 months and can't stop :) sometimes mix the three languages in one sentence so it's difficult to know what they are saying unless you know the languages. I didn't notice any speech delay and was reasured by my HV that their speech is more developed then other children's. I was also told to not to worry if they did start late as twins tend to have their speech delayed. if they don't start making any sentences by the age of 3.5 then parents should worry. good luck and try to not to stress yourself, every child is different, even if they are twins, and they do develope in their own time.
