Double buggy in the boot.

Hi,

We've just found out we're expecting twins and I need to buy a new car anyway so I guess it's time to buy an estate.

Does anyone have any recommendations for cars that can definitely fit a double buggy in the boot, plus more luggage? Does anyone have any advice around cars and twins at all that you think I might find useful?

Thank you!

depends what double buggy you are looking at!

some fold quite small, double max xt... some are huge like double mountain buggy.

:)

We have a Ford Focus and have had no problems fitting our double in but it depends on the sort of buggy you are going for, the size/width/length and how it folds. Ours was a side-by-side basic double so had plenty of room for that and other stuff.

Thanks for the response, I have no idea what double-buggy we'd be getting. Confused I guess there must be a million threads about that...

I guess I'm wondering about things like...

Is it easier if the seats are higher, for putting the babies in and out of the car? So should I maybe get an MPV? Do I need sliding doors? I've seen people say they're very useful. Will a big double fit in the back of an estate?

We have a ford focus estate and a BMW 3 series estate. Our double buggy is the out and about 360 which does not fold up very well (although you could take the wheels off whch I sometimes do - it's fairly straight forward if I can do it!)so in the BMW there is virtually no room for anything else other than the change bag (we have a roof box - is that an idea?) In the Ford there is more room but we could not go on holiday with what is left- I can just about get the shopping in. Did we get the wrong buggy? Well most twin friends have two buggies one which folds really small (umbrella) and one which is easy to steer/more robust where babies can lie flat. I can steer our buggy with one hand over quite rough terrain which since they are both toddlers now I find useful and we do live in a rural area.

We had a Citroen Xsara Picasso- massive boot! Nice to drive too.

yes yes yes¬

get a volvo!

we have a v70 and can fit a mountain buggy double in the back, or a teutonia team alu (which is HUGE) and still get most of our weekly shop in as well.

back seat is massive and can fit 3 car seats in if that became necessary lol.

it's a diesel and is fairly fuel efficient compared to our previous cars (ford focus and a renault scenic)

love it

oh and we went on a camping holiday earlier this year and fitted everyhtihng in the car.
9 person tent, sleeping bags, blow-up beds, double mountain buggy, clothes....

philw2009 · 29/10/2010 20:36

Thanks for the advice. I was considering a BMW 320d Touring but I've read there isn't that much room in the boot.

I guess we'll be ferrying the twins from where we live (London) to where our families live (Manchester and South Wales) quite often so it will need to be able to take everything we'll use. I will look at Volvo's. I am going to look at the Mondeo estate too... at 34 though I wasn't planning on being Mondeo man quite so soon. :(

haha you sound like my dp. that's partly why we went for the volvo. cos it looks more "pimp" apparently.
Confused

we briefly became mondeo family with twins and a dog...but have turned to a passat now, the acceptable face of huge estates!

We used to have a Golf and really struggled to get double Maclaren in. Got Powertwin in fine.

Now have S-Max so you can get anything in. We often have one double and two singles in it.

Egg · 30/10/2010 14:02

If you are travelling to stay with relatives a lot then bear in mind you might have to take two travel cots with you each time as well as the buggy.

With our S-max and three children we used to really struggle to fit the buggy in with the two travelcots and the rest of the paraphernalia.

Choose a car in which it will be easy for you to get in and out of the centre back seat via the front doors, thus avoiding disturbing the sleeping babies on either side.
