anaemia in twin pregnancy?

Hi there...

I'm 29 weeks with g/g non ids...both growing really well and healthy pregnancy...

My iron count is 9.8 which my registrar told me today was 'dangerously' low... i got the feeling she was being overly dramatic... or am i being overly relaxed?! I feel fine and not massively tired considering i'm already lugging 7lbs of babies around!

Tried looking online but couldn't find any specific data re twin pg and iron count...

Anyone with anaemia? What was your count and how concerned were your medics?

thanks Smile

Hi Myfourgirls- I am 26Weeks with b/g non ID twins (obv!) I had bloods done at 23 weeks due to excessive tiredness (work in ante-antal clinic so asked someone to do them for me!) anyway i was found to be anaemic but I have no idea what my iron levels were- just put on iron tablets and also back onto folic acid. No one seemed to be in a panic about it though so i guess the levels weren't that low.

I was told by one of the midwives that anaemia is more common in twin pregnancies and often strikes early than with singletons. I never suffered from it in my first preg with DD - just various other severe complications! However growth etc all seem fine this time round (am also on aspirin though due to previous PE)

Sorry not much help!

Hello

Congratulations! I have 3 yo twins, but the pregnancy memories are very clear!!

My iron count was similar, a bit earlier (about 24 weeks I think). My GP thought it fine, common with the considerable blood dilution in a twin pregnancy, my consultant was worried and called it dangerously low. I didn't get on with iron tablets, but used a tonic supplement Floradix which was very effective. So much so, that despite losing a lot of blood during the birth I managed to avoid a transfusion!

Good luck with it all.

thanks all...have since spoken to my midwife who said it will be fine to take floradix and spatone together and increase my red meat intake... the alarmist registrar said i wasn't advised to do that with such a 'dangerously low' iron count...

(she also told me she thought i would be grateful for an epidural as early as poss as i would be in 'agonising pain'. this was after trying to ask how necessary an epidural was for delivery of twins as i was as little intervention as poss... my last birth was v traumatic and mainly due to being cornered into an epidural too early...)

i hope our paths don't cross again!

Smile

Apparently under 12 is generally considered anaemic. Obviously, you have to consider circumstances. For example, around 32 weeks I had a blood test with results of 11.5, which my consultant (very sensibly!) termed "that's you not being anaemic".

Hi myfourgirls

Congrats on your twins.

I have 6 month old boy/girl twins. Can't say whether your figure is "dangerously low" but I know that at about 26 weeks my iron count was around 10. They said that it wasn't unusual to be low in a twin pregnancy because of all the extra demand on your body but that with 2 on board they would want this to be a bit higher so I just took the iron tablets they gave me which were fine. I was still going to step until week 30 so I just tried to eat as well as I could given that the little blighters take everything out of you...

Had the babies at 39 weeks and 4 days and they were healthy and fine. Good luck!!
