I was not sure which section to put this in.

Why do SOME people make it so hard for people who are black/asian?

Still when the sun starts to shine I notice that people want to get a suntan. I even hear people admiring sun tans.

I am black, and have a all year round tan. I am positive about myself and respect people who are of a different race. No one is better or less than anyone.

Any remarks on this?

What do you mean they make it hard for black/asians?

And what does the sun tan thing have to do with it.

NETTEYJC · 27/06/2010 15:57

I don't understand your question? What do you mean 'make it hard'? In a racist context?

MUM2BLESS · 27/06/2010 21:06

Sorry for the wording. Maybe it not a term that everyone uses.

Why is there racism toward black and asians (because of our colour), yet when the sun comes out, some people who are white look forward to getting a sun tan? (getting brown)

I am not saying that all people who are white are racist as I know its not the case.

You have to understand that some people are just racist. They will say anything to make themselves sound 'right'. When it comes to the sun tan thing - I don't think white people want a tan to be more like a black person, just to look a little more healthy and perhaps to look as though they have been away on holiday to an exotic location. All in all, a non-racist doesn't get a tan to be black. And a racist would definitely NOT want a tan to be black. I say, be proud whatever skin you are in...if you want to go lighter, go lighter; if you want to go darker, go darker. I am lucky enough to live in a multi-cultural society where mostly we are not judged by our ethnicity (of course there are always exceptions!). Be proud, be happy and live in peace...)

Well, racism isn't about hating people because their skin isn't white, is it? It's not as simple as that.

MUM2BLESS · 02/07/2010 17:29

Thanks for that Bexstar5.

Slowshow. Black people can be racist towards whites. In most cases is it not because someone is not white? I am open to correction.

I live in a area where there is various nationalities. My sister on the other hand lives in a white area. I also spent most of my childhood in a white area. She has experienced racism because she is NOT white. My sister is very positive about who she is and does not tolerate nosense which it is.

Also years ago black people were called names because of their lips (rubber lips) why now are people paying lots of money to have paris lips?

It's interesting.

Some White women spend a lot of time, effort and money trying to get tanned - foreign holidays, expensive salon visits etc. Having a tan is synonymous with health and fitness even though in reality, this is often not the case.

Some Black women use dangerous skin bleaching creams to lighten their skin tone, and straighten their hair or wear wigs/have weaves. My DH is West African - in his country, "fair" women are often seen as beautiful, darker complexioned woman less so.

We all want to be what we are naturally not which is quite sad really, isn't it.

Besom · 03/07/2010 11:53

I think there is as much racism towards Poles as anyone else where i live, because racism is about fear of difference and not really about skin colour per se. It's just that skin colour is a visually obvious difference.

I have read that historically in this country it was fashionable to be fair skinned because it showed that you did not have to work for a living (outside in the fields). But it was made fashionable in the 50's because it represented the fact that you were able to afford to go off for a foreign holiday. So the sun tan thing is really about class.

Tryharder I read your remarks with interest. Michael Jackson comes to mind. I do not really know whether he bleached his skin or not, but the fact is that he is no longer with us. He did put his body through so much.

He was called big nose as a child. I thought he was lovely as he was.

Its interesting about the bleaching of the skin and the tanning of the skin. Very interesting.

Its not just in the black race that lightness is considered beautiful, also in the asian race too.

Would it be wonderful if we could accept each other for whatever race and colour they may be. Some have lost their lives just because of the colour of their skin ie Stephen Lawrence.

Besome thanks, great to hear from you!

I know that there is racism against polish people and other eastern European people. As a childminder I look after a little one whose family is eastern european. WHat a shame that people behave this way sometimes.

quite often, racists are people who also have a problem with anyone who is different from them, so it is most likely nothing to do with your skin colour (how could it be? there is no justifiable reason to have a problem with someones's skin colour) it is simply the fact that it is different to theirs and that makes you a target for their hatred. people like this are not worth a thought. there is no justification for racism, it is ignorance palin and simple. you should pity them that they dont know any better.

MUM2BLESS · 03/07/2010 13:14

I want my kids to be happy with who they are and not to let other people let them feel less about themselves.

The way people think has been like that for ages, SOME of the time it is passed down from parents to their children.
