a question about schools

There are two schools close to where we live. One is graded outstanding and most of the pupils come from a White British background. The other school is much more multicultural but only has a satisfactory/good grade.

It's a while yet before I need to choose schools for my dd but I just wanted to get others' thoughts on this... which would you prefer to send your child to?

I would go and have a look around and see what kind of feel you get for both. Also consider stuff like how long it will take you to get there - are they walkable etc. Wouldn't go too much by OFSTED as some schools are just better at manipulating the data to get a better grade. Also I think at primary level, with parental support and encouragement, no child should get behind academically. What is much more important is your child going somewhere where they can gain in confidence and develop as a person. I have the same concerns for my daughter, although none of the schools around us are very multi cultural unfortunately. Am going to visit the schools as well as going to stuff like school fetes as a family to see if can pick up vibes that way.

I think you need to go round and have a walk round the school and see how you feel.

Yes I agree go and have a look your gut instinct is a lot to go on.When walking around can you see your DC actually there. My DD is mixed race and goes to a ofsted 'outstanding' infant school with 90% white british backgrounds. She is getting along just fine, happy never not wants to go in has lots of friends and doing well. Good luck with your choice its not easy.

I chose a good school over an outstanding school because it as about 10 non white dcs as opposed to 100% white british. Its Catholic and I wanted a Catholic school but I think I would have chosen it if it wasn't Catholic because its not all white. A lot of the white children are of Irish/Polish/Italian decent which I like because even though they are white there is as close to an international feel as you are likely to get in a rural area.
