Skin products for children's skin

Hi all

My children seem to have dry skin after a bath and I have tried a number of things to re-hydrate it, such as baby oil, baby lotion, children's E45 cream, but to no avail.

Can anyone suggest a product? They are mixed race black/white (if that makes a diff) and they are 6, 3 and 1 (if age makes a diff to the type of product which can be used )

Thanks

I hsve found Oilatum to be the best one around - you can get it at Boots

I get doublebase gel on pescription. It took us a while to get it as they pescribed other things first. One was oilatum and the other was dipro something I think. We also usd to get dipro-bath (for the bath) but that didn't seem to male ant difference.

We use Tesco Cocoa Butter Body Lotion. The kids love it cause it smells like chocolate. It's quite cheap (£1.14 for 400ml) & you don't need to use much on them. My youngest sometimes gets an allergic reaction to skin products & she has no problems with this lotion.

Thanks for the suggestions. My sister uses Oilatum and Diprobase on her children, but they suffer from excema so I thought it was more 'medicinal'.

Sammy3, that is the lotion that I use myself. Funnily enough, I never thought to try it on my children. May try that first and then the other suggestions if it doesn't work.

Fantastic stuff, isn't it?

pinata · 22/05/2008 18:44

have you tried sunflower or olive oil? they are better than anything i've ever tried, and i now use olive oil on myself. skin never been better. Just the stuff from your kitchen is fine

We use Aveeno lotion for our daughter, who has mild eczema. It is very good, but expensive if you have to buy it yourself - it is just a moisturiser, but available on prescription for children with eczema. Aqueous cream is much cheaper, and also quite good. Have you tried adding E45 bath oil to the bath water? I find that works wonders, far better than any creams that you can apply later, though it is also a bit costly.

you can use the pure shea butter or the pure cocoa butter from akamuti

it is wicked stuff, organic and fair trade and pure to boot

I'm mixed race a and sware by Palmers cocoa butter it smell like milk chocolate and it makes your skin lovely and silky soft and doest feel greasy like some oils. (which can also stain clothes). It's just over £2 in asda, more in boots and quite often on offer in superdrug.

LittleMissBliss · 22/05/2008 19:57

*smells and doesn't

LittleMissBliss · 22/05/2008 19:58

I'd only use it on the older ones. I use vaseline on my 6m ds's arms and legs and face if they are a little dry.

harpomarx · 23/05/2008 00:03

same as magicmummy, aveeno, I get it on prescription for dd's mild eczema.

otherwise olive/sunflower oil - you can scent it with lavender or something if you like.

slim22 · 23/05/2008 02:40

waitrose baby bottom butter. Smells yummy. It's basically solid olive oil + chamomille and vanilla extracts.

Any NON mineral oil (olive/sunflower/sesame mixed with sweet almond or avocado or jojoba + few drops lavender) applied on damp skin straight out of the bath/shower.

The above organic oil route is by far the best and works really well on my own psoriasis prone skin and saved my a**e (litterally ) from stretchmarks during pregnancy.

AandMsmum · 27/05/2008 23:57

littlemissbliss totally agree, I'm mixed race and palmers cocoa butter is amazing and smells yummy! My skin gets really dry, I barely need to dry myself with a towel I just seem to zap moisture but cocoa butter does the trick.

Palmers do an olive oil butter also - smells lighter than the heavy vanilla of the coca butter and isn't as thick to apply also. I use Aveeno also and put a few drops of geranium oil into it, and shake it up. It's really delicious then.

Burt Bee's Baby Bee do a lovely milk bath for kids and a fab lemon bath oil - I cover DD with it as she stands out of the (just warm, never hot) bath still wet. really lovely for locking in moisture, and light fragrance.

I only use conditioner on DDs hair, and rinse it really well.
