Here's where to share your experience of raising a child or growing up in a multicultural family.

Thought I'd ask you about an expression I heard at work

Commodity bit sounds weird.
What is/was wrong with mixed race anyway?

jingleyjen · 10/05/2008 20:41

both my boys are mixed race and I am not sure I would want them to be refered to as transracial, but I don't know why

KatyMac · 10/05/2008 20:41

Hmm - I don't like it

It's like transexual = sort of neither one thing nor another

MaeWest · 10/05/2008 20:42

I've never heard the phrase - have heard 'dual heritage' for mixed race tho...

jingleyjen · 10/05/2008 20:42

just asked DH
his point of view is that trans usually suggest a journey from one thing to another, ransition transgender etc
mixed race is not a journey from one thing to another.

ItsPotatoesForYouMyLad · 10/05/2008 20:45

I've heard the word used to describe an adoption 'across' (hence trans) races. I'm not sure it's correct to apply the term to an individual person.
ime some people try hard to be pc and can get it wrong mixed up

themoon66 · 10/05/2008 20:45

I thought same as jingleyjen's DH.. trans suggests a journey somewhere with a start and finish.

ItsPotatoesForYouMyLad · 10/05/2008 20:46

x- posts jen - yes i agree with that

Desiderata · 10/05/2008 20:47

Trans-racial my arse. What are they thinking?

stuffitall · 10/05/2008 20:49

wouldn't a transracial adoption mean adoption of child by parents of a different race

that's what it means to me

it's a bit up itself to use it to mean mixed race

Blu · 10/05/2008 20:53

Same as Jingley.

'transexual' is 'trans' because it is someone who has or is making a change from one to another.

'trans' isn;t a negative term - just not accurate for mixed race. But commodity? wtf is that all about?

Blu · 10/05/2008 20:54

aha - Stufit - yes - mayeb that is what the SW meant - although wouldn't that be 'cross-racial' adoption?

At at recent Diversity and Equality training course, we were advised to use the term "Mixed Heritage", rather than "Mixed Race" as the latter can be taken as a derogatory term - we are all one race (human race), but our heritage may be different.

scottishmummy · 10/05/2008 21:14

transracial definition the commodity description is most troubling

SueW · 10/05/2008 21:36

It's one step on from Human Resources isn't it?

pointydog · 10/05/2008 21:40

Someone said on here recently that some HR depts are called Human Capital, sue. They're one step ahead of you.

scottishmummy · 10/05/2008 21:40

awww those HR coneheads dehumanise everyone in the pursuit of process

SueW · 10/05/2008 21:45

OMG. Human capital? That's gross.

Kewcumber · 13/05/2008 12:20

I would describe the adoption of my DS as transracial - ie across races. He however is mixed race or dual heritage (whatever you prefer) kazakh and I am white british.

Commodity is horrid I would poke any social worker in the eye who called my DS a commodity. I know all jobs use jargon but really there is a point at which you need to think about how the outside world view you!

Leenie · 14/05/2008 23:05

this country is continually coming up with "new terms" to describe our children ! and then they call it the new PC term, like its a fad or the latest fashionable word, i would like to know what heritage these decision makers are , or even better still what their children are, i bet the answer would not be mixed , my two girls were born mixed race and will be mixed race for the rest of their lives, I would be quite pissed off, and so would they if they refered to as transracial, my eldest (17) said it sounds horrible and odd, they did not change from one colour to the other, (definition of trans)they are a beautiful mixture of both, and our 3rd little one on the way will not be getting classed as transracial either, that sounds so weird, dh says wots wrong with these people why dont they just call them human !

DashingRedhead · 16/05/2008 12:18

I think transracial sounds like something from a sci-fi film about aliens! I'm mixed race and NO WAY would I call myself that!

UserName · 16/05/2008 13:44

Change is generally bad for most, I, hands up used to use the term half-caste at school and thought nothing of it (then), I do prefer mixed race 'Transracial' just doesn't ring to nice to my ears, despite whatever well meant its intention, it sounds to similar to transsexual, the whole 'trans', not really feeling it.
