Could this be a Mongolian spot?

Hey guys, I have a 3 weeks old newborn and a few days ago I noticed a bruise like patch on her lower back and one on her bum cheek, it doesn't seem to bother her so I'm guessing it is a Mongolian spot from what I read on google? Has anyone's baby had something similar?
Btw I'm Irish and my partner is Persian

No personal experience with blue spots, but with any birthmark which could be mistaken for a bruise, make sure you get it logged in the baby's medical records/in the red book. It's also worth phographing so you can check if it grows.

DS had one, looked exactly like this. I was paranoid I'd bruised him somehow until my mum told me I also had one at birth. We have an olive skin type. My son's faded through the toddler years and vanished by about 5 or 6.

DoraChance · 11/07/2021 11:56

Oh yes, as PP says, make sure it's on record especially when starting nursery etc.

JustWonderingIfYou · 11/07/2021 11:57

Hi, my DS has them. Massive when born but are fading now. They were never super dark but visible. They are noted on birth notes to prevent them being confused with bruises later. Maybe reread notes- no one ever told me DS had them at the hospital, I was surprised the first time we got him naked at home.

CornedBeef451 · 11/07/2021 12:02

My DS has one. It looked like a massive bruise at the base of his spine which gradually faded. He now just has a raised blue mark on the top of one bum cheek about the size of a 10p piece.

As I am white and DS pretty much looks white I was a bit paranoid that people might think I'd hurt him so I told all HVs, GP etc what it was and that DH is Indian as it is much less common in white babies.

NekoShiro · 11/07/2021 12:16

I'm Hispanic and was born with big blue marks so yes it most likely is due to being mixed race and not a bruise.

Sweetpeasaremadeofcheese · 11/07/2021 12:17

My daughter has one it looks like a big bruise on her bottom. I was pulled aside and asked if everything was ok at home when she was in kinder. She's very white so while uncommon it does happen.

delilabell · 11/07/2021 12:20

Yes most of them are at the base of the spine so it sounds like it. My ds had one when born and it was recorded as pp have said. He now has what looks like a dark mole their instead .

bruffin · 11/07/2021 12:26

Ds had one at base of spine, looked like a bad bruise. My DF was Cypriot. Think it was gone by toddlerhood

bruffin · 11/07/2021 12:27

I would keep photos of it though

MarianneUnfaithful · 11/07/2021 12:40

Sounds exactly like it.

My kids both had them, mixed Mediterranean / Asian heritage.

Faded before they went to nursery.

MarianneUnfaithful · 11/07/2021 12:41

(My white-but-half-Hispanic-background niece and nephews had them too)

junebaby123 · 11/07/2021 12:49

It was not there at birth only appeared within the last week or few days and also it's in two places? I put a picture here..
Sorry as a ftm i worry so much

They can take weeks to come out

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 11/07/2021 13:22

DD1 had one, looked just the same.

Flamglimglubberty · 11/07/2021 13:26

I'm white British and my DH is Indian, DS has a blue birthmark at the base of his spine. It's quite a large downward pointing triangle shape and looks like it's pointing at his bottom! He's six now and although it's faded, it's still clearly visible. No longer looks like a bruise, just a birthmark.

DH has the exact same mark, but where his skin is darker it's harder to notice. It's very common amongst certain ethnicities, but often unnoticed on darker skin.

evtheria · 11/07/2021 13:30

DS (mixed race) had one large, subtle blueish on bum cheek, but it was pointed out to us at his birth and they recorded it. He’s now 7 and I can’t see it anymore, but I’m glad they’d noted it as it did look like a fading bruise!

HelloDulling · 11/07/2021 13:32

Def looks like it me. DD had one on her bottom, and another on her upper arm. DH and I both White British, so MW, HV etc surprised but got it all logged in the red book. She’s 15 now, and they’ve been gone for years.

Westfacing · 11/07/2021 13:36

Most likely.

Said to mean we're descended from Ghengis Khan!

Hallyup6 · 11/07/2021 13:52

Yes that absolutely looks like a Mongolian blue spot. Keep a photo of it and show your health visitor when they next come. It can be documented in your notes then, just as a precaution. Very common in darker skinned babies and usually on the lower back or buttocks. I've seen loads after working on the maternity wards.

nocoolnamesleft · 11/07/2021 13:57

Certainly looks like it. Just be aware that you may find it called something different. A couple of years ago we were all told to call them blue grey birth marks. Then there was something that came out last week telling us to call them congenital dermal melanocytosis. Which may be more politically correct, but sounds scarier!

misselphaba · 11/07/2021 14:00

Definitely get it noted in the red book at the 6 week check with the GP. The midwife noted DS' and the GP did again as it does look like a bruise.

mhb0120 · 19/07/2021 15:01

Hi there

KitKatKong · 22/07/2021 23:52

Yes- my baby had one and no need to worry

SantoPalo · 02/06/2022 07:28

Yes my son has this, lower middle back and top of bum cheeks.
