Babadoo - "Dilara" is a girl's name in Turkey, but it does not mean anything in Turkish. It might mean that in Persian, though.

cylonbabe · 21/07/2007 22:48

anything at all, as long as it has a good meaning.
we called dd huma, which is a beautiful bird that lives in paradise and has a lovely singing voice. but we had to change it as in dh's local village dialect the sound of huma has a not nice meaning.( which he didnt know, and i got tired of the liong silences after we told people her name. and then they would say a forced, 'thats nice'
she now has a name that is actually hindu origin, but has a beautiful meaning that everyone knows.

i have a 12 week old dd and had a right time trying to find a name...we decided on Aaminah, which is not very common i dont think (well i had never heard it before!). it means trustworthy, faithful, secure; name of the mother of the Prophet. After weeks of deciding we then heard the name Elissa, which we both absolutely loved and if i have another dd i will definately call her that.
we called our ds Sahil which means open river/ocean in arabic, also very unusal, i also love Ismail (the name of one of our Prophets) Mika'il (the name of an Angel) Zain (beauty) and Zaid (super abundance). Hope you find the name you are looking for!!!!i know how hard it can b

my mum thought she was pregnant and wrote down some names she liked that i think were muslim (her partner is muslim). they were esin/esen for a girl and asen for a boy. are they all pronounedc the same? in fact how are they said. i read them as ess-an and ass-en. is that right? don't like to ask as she is quite upset now she has found out she isn't pregnant.

nappyaddict · 01/08/2007 02:16

oh and is ayla eye-lah or ay-lah?

DaddyJ · 01/08/2007 08:14

we hey, my girl's name has been mentioned

nappyaddict, can you ask her partner instead?
Some names are pronounced differently depending on which part
of the Muslim world the person is from.

I have not come across esin/asen but I would pronounce
Ayla as ay-lay.

DaddyJ · 01/08/2007 08:14

Sorry - I mean: ay-lah!

LadyG · 01/08/2007 08:24

Try Nymbler I think it's www.nymbler.com you type in names you like and they give you similar cultural/religious/trendy classic ones

mixedmama · 03/08/2007 12:33

Esin is popular is Turkey.

mixedmama · 03/08/2007 12:34

Wow - ayla is what we have decided if we have a little girl...

allgonebellyup · 03/08/2007 12:42

why is everyone called mohammad?

mixedmama · 03/08/2007 12:50

I dont really know that many Mohammed's.

DaddyJ · 03/08/2007 12:58

It's a popular name but - to my knowledge - not necessarily
common across all Islamic societies, e.g. I only rarely come
across Iranian or Turkish Mohammeds.

The popularity stems from Mohammed being the name of the prophet of Islam.

mixedmama · 03/08/2007 13:02

In Turkey it is actually frowned upon to be called Mohammed as it is sacred.... not across the board of course, Mustafa is more popular....

nappyaddict · 03/08/2007 19:40

so is it ay - la and es- in? or eye-la and es-un?

PrincessGoodLife · 03/08/2007 19:49
