Hiya. I have a little girl who is 3 in August and would LOVE to start doing her hair in cornrow as it is getting quite long now. I have tried in the past and even brought a DVD from the US to try to learn but it did not help much. Was badly made and very repetitive. The DVD that is! Times when I have tried it just looks really messy and just not very good!! lol!

Is there a simple step by step method that somebody could tell me? I have even looked online and looked at diagrams but its just not happening!

I would be more than happy to pay and go on a short course just to learn how to do it if they existed.

Anybody got any hints or tips?

Thanks

Can you do french pleats, because if you can do them, cornrowing is just bringing the hair up & over instead of over & under IYKWIM.

Thanks for the response. I can only do single plaits at the moment :-( I just cannot seem to get the hang on it and would REALLY like to be able to do it by the time my daughter goes to school!

Right, can you do french plaits where you take a bit of hair either side and gradually put it into a single plait? I am pretty sure that any hairdresser will be able to show you. The plait will end up on the inside, but once you have mastered the art of that, you just plait in reverse. Good luck.

Also very popular is dividing hair into squares and making a pony tail and plaiting that. Much easier in my opinion.

Tiasmummy · 14/05/2007 21:45

No I cant even do a french plait! lol! But will try and find out how to do this first and work from there. Thanks for the tip :-)

Yes I do this style on my daughters hair as well as twists but cornrow has more "staying power". :-)

No probs, it really is easy. I wouldn't be able to do the fab job that some woman done to me on holiday but once you know how to french plait, it's terribly easy and I am sure you can do two so that she still has pigtails if you know what I mean.

If I were you I'd make an appointment for it to be done at an Afro hair specialist (we're in Bucks and there's one in Wycombe) so the stylist can show you how to do it yourself.

Tiasmummy · 15/05/2007 17:38

Hi Mumblechum. The only problem with that is I dont think she will sit still for anybody except me! I could ask one of my cousins or a friend but again I dont think she will sit still for them. I guess I could try and do it as they explain it to me....I used to always have my hair in cornrows when I was younger so cant believe I cant do them yet!

Hi - I taught myself to cornrow by watching tutorials on Youtube, they were quite messy at first but now I have mastered it I can braid my 3 year olds hair in a few minutes, she looks so cute too! I tried watching the woman that did it in the shop but she was so quick that I could never work it out, box braids are easy to do too but my daughter has the wrong sort of hair for these

Hey, I bought one of those manequin heads that the students use in salons and I just practiced alot from a diagram I found online.

I am 33 weeks pregnant so when lil man comes I will be able to cainrow his hair nice and neatly. I practice on my baby father too but I doubt our boy will have hair as afro as his.

If you keep practising you will get it.

The trick is to section the hair properly (section the design if you want a design) and then take the first section, clip back the rest of the hair and start. Do 2 or 3 stitches just to get going and the pick up a bit of hair and add to the middle stitch and then carry on adding to the middle until you have finished the row. With cainrows you go under as opposed to over with a 'normal' plait.

Good luck!

Thanks Ace :-) Could you tell me where you bought the manneqin head from? Would love to get one. Thanks :-)
