Talking about racism - book recommendations

Hi my DS is dual heritage and at pre-school. Sadly he experienced some racist comments today from his peers.

Can anyone recommend any books to help discuss the issue - both at an individual and more societal level. Preferably from a British perspective (most books I can find are American. Also most books with black lead characters tend to be American - again are there any British ones?)

Thanks!

Hi cant reccomend any british books im afraid most are american and to be honest the ones I came across were geared towards older children. What I wanted to say however is having experienced such behaviour at preschool the best thing for us was to raise it with the preschool and have the teachers speak to the parents of the children carrying it out in the same way they would any child exhibiting bullying behaviour.

I read and re-read a book called The Didakoi when I was at school. The protagonist is from a traveller background. I was bullied at school when I was little and this book resonated enormously with me as a child feeling I just didn't fit in / couldn't be accepted.

Thanks your your responses.

Pre-school were very good and discussed respecting differences etc with all the children at circle time. They also offered the parents of the other child some books about diversity - although this offer was not accepted...

I've not heard of the Didakoi but google tells me it is something of a classic - thanks

Barefoot book of children

I ordered barefoot book of children. It is beautiful. So much to see and talk about. Hoping to build up lots of self-confidence in their identity and resilience before the big transition to school. Thanks again for recommendations.

Amazing Grace and the other ones about her and her family are really good (and British).
