a "Bradford Asian"?
Someone used this phrase in conversation with me. The context was, I suppose, a kind of inverted racism, as in "Miss X would never do such a thing because she's a
Bradford Asian and they're not really known for that,". Can anyone tell me if the phrase is used a lot in Yorkshire (where the speaker comes from)? Aside from the context,
it seemed really rather odd and quite jarring.

I used to live in Blackburn and can safely say I never heard that phrase.

I did hear second generation Asian though and heritage Asians usually used to describe more middle class families and always used by white people.

I wonder who does use it, aside from the person I met. It's a curious phrase. Haven't heard the term 'heritage Asians' before.

I don't think the phrase is offensive, it's just descriptive, like "African American". It's the generalisations being made about that group that are the problem, not the phrase itself.

I think a good guide on this is what people call themselves..to some extent... so if people say it themselves then it's ok

also it's context

if someone is speaking in their capacity as a Bradford Asian

NotanOtter · 18/03/2007 14:10

never heard it!

zippitippitoes--yes, I do use that guideline (except when it comes to more extreme and abusive words that are in the process of being reappropriated).

on that note of course like anything else not everyone feels the same

It's amazing how those generalisations still have such a currency.
