we live in a predominantly white area and dont and other than my family dd has little contact with other ethnic children and school is also predominantly white. dd looks white which is fine but I dont want her doing a Thandie Newton on me and picking one of her heritages over the other if I can help it.

That looks lovely...I'll have a good read

Fauve · 05/04/2006 19:57

I was going to recommend Amazing Grace - I think she's a v strong character, as are her mum and grandma. There are several books about her, I think. There are also lots of books featuring non-white real-life heroes and heroines, eg Baroness Scotland, fairly recently ennobled by Tony Blair - Frances Lincoln is a good publisher to look out for IIRC. I would really, really hope that any state sector librarian would be able to pull out a list and show you shelves of such books immediately - that would certainly be the case in our area of London.

Katymac · 05/04/2006 19:58

Our Library is a bit of it's depth - I have tried

Fauve · 05/04/2006 20:01

Oh, and I thought \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1845070410/qid=1144263518/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_0_1/203-7914070-2681538\this, Runaway Jack} was a good, gentle book on the issue of slavery - no gross slaveship details like we used to have at school!

Fauve · 05/04/2006 20:03

I know, maybe 'hope' was the operative word there!

Katymac · 05/04/2006 20:06

We are in rural Norfolk and I'm not quite sure which year has just started here....it could be 2006.....or it could be 1956Grin

magicfarawaytree · 05/04/2006 20:33

Sorry to go off topic on this one, but katymac,I have found a website that claims to deliver hair products in the uk.

www.easywebstore.co.uk/head2toez/sitemap.aspx

They sell Motions which a lot of people use on their kids (alas, in my ceaseless quest for the perfect hair product it didn't work for me - it left my hair both utterly greasy yet bewilderingly dry at the same time!!!) I use the Kis organics shea butter lotion which suits my hair better.

Hope this helps!

MrsBadger · 10/04/2006 12:00

not much help from a specific-heritage-enhancing point of view, but \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0552551384/qid=1144666490/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_3_1/202-9549899-4435022\But Martin} is my top pick for the starting-school-where-not-everyone-looks-the-same niche.

magicfarawaytree · 11/04/2006 21:15

all these are excellent - i hardly know where to start - except now its because I feel spoilt for choice
