I know there was a similar thread to this - but no-one talked about how long it takes to heal or how much salt to put in the bath. So can anyone help me - as my DS is having it done on wednesday

Does this help?

My DS took around 3 weeks to heal totally. Try to allow your DS as much time with his nappy off as possible and keep him scrupulously clean. Our doctor gave us an iodine type solution to use twice a day in a bath but I know many recommend salt and we used it once the iodine had run out. Do not use baby wipes on the penis area until it is completely healed, just water and cotton wool.
The first couple of times he wees will be painful and the urine will squirt out in all directions, we panicked but this is perfectly normal and will return to a single stream after a couple of days. Good luck.

Dorrit - thanks for that thread, it has both helped and confused as I know when we go back for checkup tomorrow, doc will tell us to use dettol. Pink magic - I thought lots of nappy free time might help, so that confirms it for me. DS did well today and has gone to sleep OK - so I believe after tomorrow it will get easier. thanks to you both

I have 2 sons that were circumcised. I would suggest that you use gauze between the penis and the nappy for the first few days in case the bleeding causes sticking to the nappy. You can get gauze squares easily from Boots and it was the best tip I had. Apart from that, don't worry, it heals quickly - just change nappies often and keep very clean.

I'm absolutely chilled by these messages. You're calmly talking about amputating a healthy part of your 'darling son's' genitals - without any consideration to his right to bodily integrity or to choose his religion. If you can't understand the disgust other women feel at what you have done just imagine this was a bunch of fathers talking about amputating their daughter's clitoral hood. This common form of forced female circumcision can get a parent 14 years in prison - quite rightly. So should male genital mutilation.

DimpledThighs · 01/03/2007 19:25
Hmm
DarrellRivers · 01/03/2007 20:27

Vg, I don't think that the original poster was asking your opinions on whether you approved of male circumcision or not or your views on the subject and to be honest I don't think male circumcision is comparable directly to female as it is not carried out to limit having sexual intercourse and does not have such common complications such as abnormal urination, inability to have a normal sex life or to indeed have sex afterwards, or alter your ability to have children.
OP was probably worried by the operation anyway and your comments wouldn't have helped
AND this thread is very old as well, just seen it is from last year!

Elasticwoman · 01/03/2007 20:34

VG you have a right to voice your opinion on MN whether it was asked for or not. And it seems to me that abnormality of urination in circumcised males was mentioned by previous posters. I have heard grown men complain about circumcision giving them sexual problems in adult life - although I admit there are also plenty of circumcised men who seem to think it's a good thing. If female circumcision were to prevent sexual intercourse, it would pretty soon die out as the victims (I use the word advisedly) would not be able to reproduce, would they?

DarrellRivers · 01/03/2007 20:36

Find out some more about female circumcision first before posting

ScottishThistle · 01/03/2007 20:39

Why would you want to find out more about female circumcision!!! [how bloody awful emoticon]

Elasticwoman · 01/03/2007 20:40

I post my opinion based on the evidence I already have. If you want to disagree with anything I have said, feel free to correct me.

Blandmum · 01/03/2007 20:44

female circumcision (or genital mutilation) covers a range from the removal of the clitoral hood, excision of the clitoris, through to removal of the labia and the stitching together of the raw wounds. In the most extreme cases The girl is left with a match stick sized hole to allow the flow of urine and menstrual fluid. She will then be cut open to allow sex to happen. She may well be re-stitched when pregnany and cut again for deliver. Such treatment may result in the break down of tissue and the formation of fistulas.

Whatever your feelings about male circumcision, the two are not comparable.

Bubble99 · 01/03/2007 20:45

In response to the OP.

If the circ is carried out using the Plastibell/local anaesthetic method then the healing process is usually very straightforward.

Like an umbilical cord clamp, the Plastibell will fall off within a few days (usually three or four.) You should be given some sterile cleaning solution by the doctor to clean the area inside the Plastibell during each nappy change. After that you'll need Vaseline to apply for a couple of days.

DragonDooDoo · 01/03/2007 20:47

It's an old thread, bubble. I think he'll be healed by now

DragonDooDoo · 01/03/2007 20:47

(oh, sorry, it's marthamoo - forgot to change my name back)

twelveyeargap · 01/03/2007 20:49

There are medical reasons for male circumcision, never female, as far as I know, so I think we can surmise that they are two very different things.

DH was circumcised at the age of 9. Is that "barbaric"? Or should the hospital have allowed him to go through life in pain and with contstant infections?

And personally, I like it. I'm glad he had to have it done.

Bubble99 · 01/03/2007 20:49

Ah yes! Just looked at the date.

He's probably a High Court Judge by now.

twelveyeargap · 01/03/2007 20:50

Oh and sorry, I hope your DS is ok today tabby.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 01/03/2007 20:55

Big assumption that the circumscisions in question were performed for religious reasons, just because it was posted in Multicultural Families presumably.. boys from all ethnic backhrounds must need it done for medical reasons sometimes too..

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 01/03/2007 20:56

Well I hope he is TYG! Seeing as it was WHOLE year ago, I sincerely hope his willy has not been festering that long!

DarrellRivers · 01/03/2007 20:57

lol , i'm sure it is better now

Blandmum · 01/03/2007 20:59

Shiny, a mate of mine is muslim, but didn't want to have her two ds's 'done'. Both of them needed it later for medical reason. She was convinced her mother had arranged devine intervention

DrMarthaMcMoo · 01/03/2007 21:02

mb, maybe she was right - all that moving in mysterious ways...

dawnharvey68 · 13/06/2007 02:27

For info of anyone going through this now - it depends of course on the age of the boy - the younger the quicker the healing.

Our baby son was circumcised a couple of weeks ago, by the plastibell method. The plastic bell fell off after 4-5 days and it was completely healed within a week!

For an older child, it is a more complex matter often involving stitches and could take several weeks.
