Boys names for a Turkish English Bangladeshi household.... arrrgh

So tis is our ethnic mix at home. The name doesnt so much hve to work in Englsh as it needs to be easily pronouncable since after 30 years my mum still cannot pronounce most of my dads familiys names.

Both other sons have short 4 letter easy names.

We veer towards Muslim names so that it works in Turkey and Bangladesh.

So far the closest we have come is:

Rafi
Mikhail

I dont want traditional so no Mustafa's etc.

My sister is married to a Turkish man. She called her son Thomas or Tomaz in Turkish.

QuintessentialShadows · 28/11/2010 14:35

erm

Alexander ?

SantasNutellaFairy · 28/11/2010 14:35

Arun?

Tomaz... have never heard of that interesting.

Boys names are unreasonably hard.

Rafi is the most we have agreed so far but it has anickname sound to it which is all that puts me off and the way the "a" would be the emphasis in Turkey which makes it sound old man like.

Erdem (easily pronounceable)
Alireza (ds has a friend with this name at school, though he is Iranian not Turkish, gets called Ali for short, which is easy)

Thanks -

Well 6 weeks left now and the discussion is still going.

I love Cem and DH loves Zayn and I hate his choice and he dislikes mine. So now we are on either Ali or Idris as a compromise. Idris being my brother/grandfathers name and Ali being way too common but an acceptable compromise.

On the plus side my other two DSs refuse to call the baby anything other than Cem so maybe I will get my own way. Wink

Not sure if it works in Turkish but how about Danyal?

mixedmamameansbusiness · 16/02/2011 14:00

Update: We have fINALLY agreed on Emir.

DH has promised to let me spell with an E which is the Turkish way and I have promised not to get too uptight if his parents and extended family pronounce as Amir.
