Can anyone recommend a hairdressers that's good with mixed-race (Afro/European) hair in South London?

Easy to find, you'd think, but I haven't had much luck. I've taken my 2 girls, who have fairly classic mixed-race hair, to all the local hairdressers, both Afro and European (including several on Acre Lane), and they trim it ok but always leave the poor things looking awful so it's not a great experience for them.

I'm not interested in paying loads extra for braids etc. One Afro hairdresser tried to blowdry DD1's long, corkscrew hair straight and she looked like the 'before' picture in the Frizz Ease ads; another fluffed DD2's shoulder-length, tightly-curled hair into an Afro which she hated, but didn't seem to know how to define the curls. The European hairdressers, unsurprisingly, are no better.

I used to have a lovely lady recommended by MarsLady who came to our flat in North London, so I've been spoilt; I know realise it's more of a specialist skill than I thought.

Any top recommendations?

ive got a large soft bristle brush a round one and its fantastic getting the knots out they dnt even flinch. only prob is it goes frizy and afro

JayneIsabella and Sarahmarie: have a look at the mixed-race hair thread and also the tightlycurly website.

My advice: spray hair with water/olive oil mix. Get it really wet then add a big gloop of conditioner so you can see it in the hair. Finger comb, and/or use a wide-tooth comb. Tackle knots from the ends first then move up towards the root.

Then you can either form curls as per the tightlycurly site (twist them round your finger or just pull small sections), or use a natural bristle brush to smooth the hair into bunches/ponytail/plaits etc.

If that doesn't work you're probably not using enough water and/or conditioner. Use loads - more than you think you need.

Wash about once a week, and put a Stay-On Satin headscarf on them at night.

This is an excellent salon. There are 2 senior stylists a Man and a woman and they are both very good with mixed raced hair. Its a nice place in Covent Garden. I was saved.

I do know that Fabian, the head stylist, was giving a mixed-raced woman's hair a blow-dry when I arrived for my appointment. Another vote for Junior Green.

Pricey but so so worth it.

I did try Junior Green but would prefer a stylist who doesn't straighten hair. Also the girls aren't keen to go back because it really hurt!

Well on Friday we took the plunge and went to Jodie at Headmasters in Clapham South. Jodie doesn't specialise in mixed-race hair but has lovely naturally curly hair herself. DD1 (8) had her hair cut from bum-length to shoulder-length and Jodie made a fantastic job of it. She also trimmed DD2 (6)'s hair.

Highly recommended for anyone with corkscrew curls; DD2's hair is a bit more afro and looked a teeny bit frizzy after the trim but both cuts were perfect and DD2's slightly more loosely-curled hair looked amazing.

My daughter is mixed race and has never had her hair cut until today (she's 5!). On the recommendation of a friend, I took her to What About Me in Wimbledon. It was amazing. Not only was DD's hair cut to perfection, but the lovely Vanessa talked me through how to take care of it properly. DD thoroughly enjoyed the experience. She got to sit in a pink airplane chair while her hair was being cut, could watch a DVD of her choice or read a book and was offered biscuits and juice. When finished DD was given a goody bag to take home. DD declared that Vanessa is the best hairdresser in the world and that she wants her to be her hairdresser forever and ever! We live in Blackheath, so Wimbledon is quite a trek, but it's worth it. The haircut cost £27.95 and the salon is for children only.

I have cut my hair with her for 2 years and can never change hairdressers. I really hope she opens a salon soon as shes mobile so hard to get hold of but she trained in NY at Devachon Salon and cuts mine and my daughters hair like no other hairdresser ever has. Shes not afriad of ANY texture lol! its refreshing to say the least as I've been turned away from Salons numerous times :( unless i wanted the slick to my for head look of course.
