For all asian mums if they cook curries, does your toddler eat it or you have to cook something separate for them. I myself have reduced the amount of chilly but still ds 20 month cant eat.

In my husband's family (Indian Malaysian) the children don't eat anything with chilli in until they're quite old (I think about 6 years old) as it's an irritant to the digestive system. My ds is 15 months old and he will have a mild dahl or curry, but not very often as it does cause nappy chaos.

BLANKfloozypuddingandpie · 01/09/2005 15:15

I'm not Asian but my dd at 19 months absolutely loves curries.

moondog · 01/09/2005 15:17

I live in Turkey and my ds has been eating exactly what we aet in restaurants since the age of 8 months or so. I make lots of curries and hot food and he and his sister (4) eat them. I wouldn't give them anything too fiery though, and often calm things down with plenty of plain rice and yoghurt.

lucy5 · 01/09/2005 15:18

My friends from ghana and her daughter eats hotter food than me and I like my food hot, shes 5 by the way.

4kids · 01/09/2005 15:46

All my kids eat hot food we eat alot of west indian food in our house alot of curry goat & jerk chicken & when they go to there grandparents they have a west indian meal there to.

RachD · 01/09/2005 15:53

I'm not asian either but ds (19 mths) will eat anything - chilli-curry, anchovies, pastrami, pepperoni - anything.

Maybe your ds won't eat anything spicy - many children won't - some of them just want bland, bland, bland.
But maybe you just need to tone it down a little bit more ?

motherinferior · 01/09/2005 15:55

DD2 likes chilli, I think; DD1 doesn't.

saadia · 01/09/2005 15:56

ds1 (3.5) will eat lamb, mince, chicken and daal cooked in the traditional spices but only if the there is no chili, otherwise he says his mouth is hurting, while ds2 (1.5) can tolerate slightly spicier food.

With ds1, what I sometimes do is mix natural yogurt (which he loves)into his meal. We aim to have them eating whatever we're eating and have actually toned down the chili in our meals to make it more palatable for them.

motherinferior · 01/09/2005 15:57

I used to give mine quite a bit of coconut milk-based stuff when they were little; I keep meaning to do us all something along that lines, probably wiht green coriander and curry leaves but not green chili.

hercules · 01/09/2005 16:02

Lots of curries here but no chillies until 5 or 6.

Nightynight · 01/09/2005 16:48

dx forbade all spicy food for the children, on the grounds that it would blunt their taste buds. traditionally not given until older.

MarsLady · 01/09/2005 17:07

Plain yogurt is the answer!

Nightynight · 01/09/2005 17:10

you come round and tell him then mars

MarsLady · 01/09/2005 17:11

That wasn't aimed at you nighty night... it's just what I do with mine.

They've all eaten Jamaican food from very tiny and have each gone through a "it's too hot" phase. Now they chow down with the best of them.

Which is good, cos I'm too lazy to cook separate meals!

stitch · 20/09/2005 21:12

pomi, havent seen you around for a while. how are you getting on?

my kids get given the curries we eat, but i prefer not to put too many chillies in, so usually ok. but my mil has explosively hot curries. they are so hot, i cant eat them but my kids can! i think she would wash the bit of chicken she was feeding them when they were younger, 1ish, but now theat they are older, 2.5, 4 and 8, she just gives as is. and they eat it!
plain youghurt is wonderful

albosmum · 20/09/2005 21:38

Not asian but my ds2(17 months) likes a mild curry or tomato sauce with a few chillis but ds1 refuses all spicy or tasty food(aged 9)

spidermama · 20/09/2005 21:39

My son loves hot curries (he's five) but my 7 year old daughter doesn;t.

Pomi · 21/09/2005 15:31

Thanks stitch I am getting on well with my kids.

I too sometimes wash the meat from a curry, if not give them without masala. They eat it it if it is chicken, lamb or potato but not the veg.

This is something I always wondered about! I have learned something new today.

halima · 08/03/2006 21:20

Hi Mums

My DH is Asian and loves his curries. My DS is 7 months and I have tried takka dahl and fish curry. DS hates it! My in-laws tell me to feed DS the potato and rice (mashed)from our curry with some of the curry sauce. Haven't tried this coz want DS to have protein and vegetables. What should I do??

Dear halima, Just read your message. Have you tried dail? lentils (orange, small), you just-sock in cold water for a 2-3hours, wash 2-3times, put it in a large pan and boil with double amount of water, untill soft, add tsp of Turmeric and salt. In a frying pan add oil to fry 1 M. onion-choped fine. and garlic 4-5 choped. add to lentils - not oli, and stir, add fresh coriander! eat with white rice (stick!) My boys loved it, and they still do. (9yrs-5yrs). You could also try this- finely silce 2 large potoes, and two carrots (small), one onion-choped,-fry the onion and then add the potoes+carrots, fry with oil and the add tsp of Turmeric and salt! and add fresh coriander, eat with bolied rice again. I used to feed my kids with my hands, its easier. Any probs please ask!!!
Re-Turmeric-is not hot or spices!!!

halima · 13/03/2006 11:01

Thanks, will give it a try and let you know how it goes Smile

milward · 13/03/2006 11:05

I put some cottage cheese on the plate with the curry. My kids love to mix it with the curry as it reduces the heat!

halima · 29/03/2006 18:48

Elmie, I have some questions!

Is the 2nd recipe a bhaji? When you fry the onion, does it need to be melted down to a paste?

vini · 08/10/2006 18:29

hi i am a asian mum, i have a 3yr10months boy, i usually prepare curries with less amt of chilli and keep it aside for him, and letter add few more green or red chilli and make it spicy.
