Have car insurance premiums gone up this year?

My daughter's just renewing hers - she's 25, it's a Ford Ka, annual mileage about 10,000, & she's coming up to 2 years NCD.

All the quotes are higher than last year (min £55 a month, this year is £47)

I thought 25 was when they dropped sharply, but is it 26 these days?

2 years no claims is still not much regardless of age

Ponders · 29/06/2010 22:26

No, I know, but it's better than 1, which is what she had last year when the quotes were lower!

You would think 25 plus 2 yrs NCD would be cheaper than 24 plus 1 yr NCD, wouldn't you?

(all other factors still the same)

It seems unfair but we pay premiums based on other people's crap driving to be honest.

I have recently renewed our insurance and the quotes were a lot more than last year. We are both in our late forties, have full no claims and my hubby's three points had expired. One company said that some of it was due to the snow and ice in the winter and all the claims being made.

Lonicera · 30/06/2010 17:50

mine was about the same

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 30/06/2010 18:00

My premium wasn't any higher, about the same but they tried to charge a £45 admin fee and a £30 renewal fee on top of the £170 premium. I told them where to stick their insurance.

I've never known my insrance go down and have 10 years of no claims. It never went down when I got to 25/26/etc.

MrsJohnDeere · 30/06/2010 18:04

Our original renewal quote was horrifically high but then dh did have a spectacular crash during the snowy weather. But when we said we'd take our business elsewhere they managed to reduce it to near enough the same as this year.

Ponders · 30/06/2010 23:22

Not just her then - that is (sort of) cheering

Mind you she has a very high annual mileage (15000+), which always bumps premiums up, & I'm not sure we knew how high it would be when we renewed last year so maybe we got a lower quote due to that - now I think on..

Luckily she is buggering off to Thailand & points east in December so car insurance will become a distant memory (for a while!)

see, I said 10,000 in my first post, I was lying again

In fact she has done 36,000 miles in the first 2 years eeeeek

My premium went up this year (22yo and 5 years no claims) but I managed to knock £120 off the premium with the same company without changing any details.

Could your DD manage to pay the whole sum in one go? You do pay a premium for monthly payments so it might be worth looking at how much she would save by switching to annual payments.

Also, does she have any named drivers? I found that having my mum on my policy as a named driver dropped my premium quite a bit even though she never drove the car. My ex dropped it even more because he came under 'professional' on the employment thing and apparently they don't crash a lot

moragbellingham · 05/07/2010 13:05

Mine go up each year, although no claims

I do a comparison and find the cheapest alternative company and then let my current one know. They like to match it then.

firsttimemum77 · 05/07/2010 16:56

Hi - yes I found that too...
I paid £650 ish last year and this year I was not getting any quotes under £800! Thats despite holding a full clean driving licence for 11 years and have 9 years NCB!

Luckily I managed to get a deal with a company that were offering 2 months free car insurance and managed to keep the cost to same as last year!

Ponders · 05/07/2010 20:58

Well I went into the local NFU office today - they said their rates are about 25% up on last year across the board, which backs up the comments here, & I got a quote a bit better than the comparison sites, considering that:

a) the extra charge for monthly payments is minute (only about 2%)

b) 1st payment is due 1 month after starting the policy & then there are 10 more, no double payment upfront

c) there is no charge at all for any admin changes

d) it's a proper reputable local office with real people behind a desk!

It's still about £680 all in, but clearly that's what she has to pay.

Thanks all
