Tax Return

LouIsWaltzingMatilda · 16/06/2010 11:57

Ok I am going to admit to ignornace and stupidity first off.
I was told when I first moved to the UK that I do not need to do a tax return as I did not earn enough and also becase I had nothing to claim.
However my boss now was asking if I had done it yet (just part of a random discussion).
So do I need to do one?
Thanks
Lou

Did you work between April 09 & April 10?

Did you have money in the bank earning interest?

Did you have more that one job between April 09 & April 10?

If yes - then you might have too give them a ring & ask

LouIsWaltzingMatilda · 16/06/2010 12:36

I have worked fulltime since Spetember 2006. I have had three jobs in total since then.
As for money in the bank, well I think I spend it too quickly to earn interest.

It's probably OK then - it might be worth asking but generally they send you one if you need one

How much do you earn?

Are you employed or self-employed?

Are you on PAYE?

LouIsWaltzingMatilda · 16/06/2010 13:34

I earn crap all. Less then 21000/year and am not self employed.

If you pay straight PAYE, have no unearned income from investments and you're confident that your tax code is correct then you've probably paid the right amount of tax...

However, having said that, I ran my pensioner parents' details through my tax return software a few years ago and discovered that my father was owed £500 and my mother £100. I do mine every year, just in case...

Your boss is deducting tax and National Insuarance from your wages isn't he/she?

LouIsWaltzingMatilda · 16/06/2010 15:23

My boss deducts everything. He uses Nannytax.
I am slightly paranoid now that I should have been doing a return.

Rather than succumbing to paranoia you could always run your income details through an online tax calculator like this one and see if you've been paying the right amount. If it turns out your employer has got it right then there's no need to do a tax return or make a claim. If the numbers are way out then you should talk to your tax office and make a claim for a refund. Obviously, if they've undercharged you on the tax you keep quiet about it and do nothing
