How much personal spending money do you have?

Following on from my relationships thread, in an effort to sort in some inequalities in our finances, I'm proposing to DH that we both have the same amount of 'pocket money' per month and the rest goes on joint bills or savings.

How much do you think is reasonable to suggest. This wouldn't include food, bills etc but would include clothes, meals out, coffees etc.

Do you think £350 per month each would be OK?

I realise how long is a piece of string, but we are out of London and don't have any ridiculously expensive hobbies (plus 2 small DS so don't actually go out that much either)

I tend to think of it the other way round - what do we want/need to save after bills etc and then the rest is spending money.

I can only dream of having that amount of "pocket money"

I suppose it depends on how much income you have - a little to save would be good.

We pay bills, put a bit in the savings and whatever is left we use for luxuries like clothes, coffees, etc. Nothing like £350! If that fits your income though then fine.

That doesn't include saving though. So ideally, I want to spend less than that and save some. That would also have to include Christmas, holidays etc

i think you really need to draw up a proper budget planner. what are your outgoings per month, how much do you want to spend on hols per year, how much on christmas per year, how much do you want to save, split it all down monthly and see what you would have left and halve it to see what spending money you will have.
personally i have pretty much £0 a month. i have to budget in clothes and shoes on the occasional month when i need them, however i now don't go over my overdraft limit, can pay all my bills and monthly debts and feed my family so i'm pretty happy.
good luck to you and enjoy!

Hols, Xmas, Birthdays, weekends away etc all come out of our central budget, so I have very little pocket money per month. Probably £50 once all ds's expenses have gone out (£250 per month )
