in so much s**t don't know what to do

I am a regular poster but have changed my name for this.

I am three months behind on my rent, have no chance of getting credit for a quick loan (on benefits) and nobody i can ask. I owe so much money I am s**tting myself. How the hell can i get £2000 next week?

I am absolutely off my head with worry.

the only thing i can think of is my violin which is worth £650. How do those loans from Cash converters type pawnshops work? will they lend you more than the value of the item?

No don't go near loan sharks, thats why i suggested the credit card as that was a better option than a loan shark by far.

Are there other bills you can put off in order to pay rent this month?

None of this resolves the longterm problem though, you need to speak to CAB.

damndamndamn · 05/08/2005 21:01

The thing is...I am fairly confident that i could pay off a loan Ok, but it is the urgency of it which is worrying me. I don't want my landlady to know i have lied to her so i really only have a few days to get the money. it is really important to me that nobody in my friends/family find out about this i think.

no, thanks anyway.

i think it is going to have to be a loan shark TBH. But don't know the right kind of people or places to go- must have led a sheltered life i suppose.

expatinscotland · 05/08/2005 21:27

Sell the violin! That way you'll at least have some of the debt paid.

And get to CAB asap. If your council has an advise shop, go there, too.

Hattie05 · 05/08/2005 21:33

Oh please don't go to a loan shark. They are dangerous and you have actually no stand at all. At least if it were credit card or proper loan you're not going to be attacked for repayments.

If i were you i'd gather everything violin, tv, watch, jewellery and be off to the pawn shop rather than a loan shark. Do a boot fair on Sunday to sell any other bits in your house, like books, cd's you're not bothered about anymore.
Pawn shops will probably take dvd's.

Do you have children? any old baby gear, or toys no longer used, clothes no longer worn to sell at a bootfair?

MrsGordonRamsay · 05/08/2005 21:35

NO LOAN SHARKS

damndamndamn · 05/08/2005 21:36

I'ma bit worried about selling my tv though as my friends/family would notice. It wouldn't atcually bother me, don't watch that much but its quite noticeable,no? Unless i told them i'd been burgled?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 05/08/2005 21:37

loan sharks

Don't do it!

expatinscotland · 05/08/2005 21:37

Tell em you passed it on to someone who needed it more. You won't have the expense of TV license, either.

niceglasses · 05/08/2005 21:41

DDD, really feel for you - which isn't what you want, you need practical advice which'll help and I don't know that I've got much more to add.

I've sort of been in similar situation myself and my only advice is - don't tell more lies on top of other ones - was a bit worried about the burglary comment. Just tell the truth, hard I know, but it actually releases the pressure a bit and then you can start working things out - I think most pple understand, but nobody likes being lied to. Sorry if this sounds preachy - don't mean to and like I say, been there meself.

Yeah, maybe pawn shop might be the best bet. I think if you have cheque book and card they can sort of lend you money ahead of wages/benefits, but I don't know what sort of interest they charge probably astronomical - so probably not good finiancial sense at all.

Hattie05 · 05/08/2005 21:42

Do you have children? Pretend you've decided its terrible for their health and you want to try living without. You can add that you sold it to make some extra cash for yourself to make it sound more convincing.

On that subject i was seriously thinking about life without tv last night. Because it does just turn me into a moron of an evening!! I know of only one person who refuses to have a tv in her house and she is a wonderful very eccentric lady and when she talks to me about how she can't understand this 'families all sat on sofas staring at a box syndrome' it make me shrink into my shoes!

Sorry totally off subject i know

expatinscotland · 05/08/2005 21:43

DDD
Make sure you take photo ID w/you to the pawn shop, our Cash Converters requires it.

Hattie05 · 05/08/2005 21:45

Can you also consider cancelling other luxuries?

Mobile phone or house phone? if you have both can you decide on keeping whichever works out cheaper and get rid of other.

If you have broadband can you lose that for a while?

Any memberships like Gym.

Do you drive? could you cope without for a while? Not suggesting you sell your car, but even cancelling an insurance policy could get you a few hundred in refund until you're in a better situation.

damndamndamn · 05/08/2005 21:51

yep. do have one child. don't want to say age/sex as i don't want anyone to know my regular MN name.
but i could try that i suppose. TBH the tv isn't really something i would miss.

Can't sell pc as it was a gift from BIL (not sure if gift/long term loan really).
Violin is worth £650 but i suppose i wouldn't get that much (even though could provide receipts). Actually it must be worth more than that now, it was £650 in 1993 when i bought it and it is an antique.
Video, digibox, scanner, thats all i can think of which would bring in anything really. Don't have any dvd's.

OP posts:
damndamndamn · 05/08/2005 21:52

i don't drive. Actually have just thought- there is no way i can do any of this (except maybe violin). how would i get tv on the bus!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 05/08/2005 21:53

DDD
You might be able to take it piece by piece - just make separate trips up to Cash Converters.

Can you tell I've done this before?

ScummyMummy · 05/08/2005 21:54

Oh poor you. I think you need to see a debt counsellor as quick as possible for detailed advice. Can you get a budgeting loan? I think they'll lend up to £1000 which I realise isn't enough but would be something. Please, please, please don't go the loan shark route. It will only make things worse.

Hattie05 · 05/08/2005 21:55

Do you have a friend you could ask to help? I'm sure you will need that emotional support also.

Another thought is i wonder if pawn shop would consider picking it up from you - probably not - just wondered if its worth asking.

damndamndamn · 05/08/2005 21:56

lol! My tv doesn't come apart! And would have dd and buggy.
I reckon i can take violin and video and digibox on bus.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 05/08/2005 21:58

A rucksack or one of those trolley thingies could help you shift them.

damndamndamn · 05/08/2005 21:58

i don't think i can tell any of my friends TBH.
