Hi there

My dp is starting a new job in the same workplace from July and will be earning approx. £600 extra a month. We get housing benefit and I know I have to inform them immediately but does anyone know if I have to tell the tax credits office straight away?or do we just wait until the next tax credits renewal comes through? I dont want to end up owing them but am just trying to work oout how much we will have a month from then.

i think you are to tell them straight away, although i got my renewal pack yesterday.

ilovecakes · 13/05/2010 14:17

I have had my renewal pack as well and have already sent it back as it only asks for our earnings for the last tax year, there was nothing on it asking for how much we will earn this tax year.

I would let them know as soon as possible.

I have never had any trouble myself but I have heard of others having awful trouble with overpyaments etc. I just wouldn't risk not telling them ASAP.

ok thanks,I will do.Just wasn't sure if I needed to or not as the payments are normally based on the previous years earnings aren't they?

They are based on the previous tax year but they do ask to be notified of any changes in circumstance immediately

tell them straight away - there will be a system generated income in for tax year 10/11 and when you come to renew around april 2011 and your income is over £6000 more you are at risk of being overpaid.

the tax credits system is so complex and takes so many factors into account any changes you have you should always phone or send in a letter when anything changes ie hours, income, childcare, benefits, within 3 months of the change to avoid any under or over payments
