Spain, gap year and bank accounts

DD2 (18) is off to study in Spain for 3 months this Autumn
She will be paying rent and all other living expenses, and the bank of mum and dad will be funding quite a lot of it.

My question is any recommendations about managing her finances whilst abroad.

Should she open a current account in Spain, continue with her current account here(HSBC), use a UK credit or debit card, etc etc ?

She is sensible with money and I know won't do anything stupid, but I definatly don't want to leave her short in an emergency>

All advice gratefully received. thanks

DS has just returned from 10 weeks in Switzerland and managed OK by using his UK bank account - though of course, you have to pay charges on every withdrawal from an ATM. If she needed to use cheques, though, she might need a Spanish account.
