Urgent advice needed re: car insurance?

returningstress · 06/05/2010 12:56

I am trying to buy car insurance right now as need it by tomorrow.

Just wondering if I had an insurance policy with my mum as the main driver of my car and I was the named driver would I still get the no claims bonous at the end of the year?

As my insurance is coming up at over £700 so am thinking of putting my mum on my policy.

Also I was told in the past if you are fully comp on your own policy then you can drive other peoples policy 3rd party. Is this correct?

Also if it is true if I was a named driver on a policy could I still drive other cars as 3rd party?

I hope someone that has a clue about this stuff will be along soon...

Would your mum actually be the main driver?

If you are fully comp you can drive other people's cars 3rd party. Not sure that if you are a named driver you can drive other cars 3rd party.

Not sure on the NCB thing - if you are actually the main driver you shouldn't have someone else as the main driver. Also if your mum already has car insurance she would have 0 years NCB on this policy as you have to build up NCB separately on difference policies IYSWIM.

You can get emergency policies i think so if you only need it for a short while you could do that.

You can only build up a no claims discount if you are the main driver/policy holder. So you'd need to add your mum as a named driver (this doesn't usually increase the premium, in fact it may actually bring it down)

I think you're right on being insured to drive any other car with 3rd party cover. That's always been the case on any fully comp policy I've taken in the last 15 years.

If you're trying to save money, don't forget to use comparison sites to find the cheapest deal. Then check quidco to see if any of the cheapest companies offer cashback by clicking through www.quidco.com !

Thanks for the advice, I have checked all the comparison sights and still feel it is more expensive then I thought it would be.

The cheapest policy I found I called them to buy the policy and they told e I was not 3rd party on other peoples cars and if I was to loose my inurance certificate it would cost me £25 to replace it. (I know I am unlikly to looae it, but they were telling me about loads of other charges and did not sound like a nice company to go with).

For future use you could consider doing a Pass Plus driving course. It can knock £££ off your insurance.

Be careful about the 3rd party thing, neither mine, my Mums or my Dads (3 different companies) allow you to drive anyone else's car under the 3rd party rule (think they have removed this in the last 5 years as I assume too many peopel were doing it rather than having insurance for their vehicle)

ICouldHaveWrittenThis · 06/05/2010 13:25

You can't put your Mum as the main policy holder if she isn't going to be the main driver. It may reduce your insurance to have her named on the policy (when i was paying similar amounts on my car insurance, it lowered the cost to have my Dad on - he did occasionally drive the car too)

Some policies allow you to accrue a NCB as a named person on a policy (my sister did just this - she hasn't passed her driving test yet, but as she's been named on my parents insurance for a year, she has one year NCB - check with the company to see if this applies.)

Basically, check with the insurance company about these particular points, as they all differ slightly, esp about the 3rd party thing.

Thanks again for the advice

Icouldhavewritten - do you know what company your family are with?

Sorry, I don't know.. been trying to remember.

The driving other cars extension is only given to the policy holder and not named drivers and a lot of companies no longer offer this extension as it was being abused.

As for no claims bonus, most companies only provide to the policy holder.

Be careful though, if you are putting your mum as the main driver to reduce the premium this is called fronting and you may find in the event of a claim your insurers will not pay. Named drivers can also be excluded for cover for commuting.

ageing5yearseachyear · 06/05/2010 21:35

echo that you will only get driving other vehicles cover if you are the named policyholder- will not apply to named drivers on the policy.

this does not apply to any vehicle owned by you or leased to you ( ie you cannot get 2 cars insured for the price of one)

driving other vehicles does not come as standard and rarely available to under 25s.

adding mum to your policy might just reduce the policy but if it is your car and you are the main user make sure that your policy reflects this.

Direct line allow named drivers to build up their own no-claims (though might just be for direct line if you know what I mean)
