help me understand tax codes

My P60s have arrived in the post and I don't understand them.

I returned to work in September after having two-and-a-bit years off with my dd. I am doing supply teaching. I am registered and have worked for three agencies, but most of my work only comes from one agency.

I didn't have a P45 to pass on when I registered as I hadn't been working. I do have one from 2007 (I think) from the previous year.

One agency has marked my final tax code as BR.
Another has marked it numerically.
I haven't received the third.

How do I know which code I should be using... and how can I ensure that each agency is paying the right amount?

your numeric one will be the one that has your tax allowance for the year . the other 2 should have BR (basic rate on ) as you have already used the alloance on the first one

thanks Joby. Does this seem right then? I'm not sure about the numeric one / tax allowance?

You should probably be down as 647L for your first one which is your tax allowance of £6470 for the year. The third one should be BR too as any subsequent job needs to be basic rate for tax.

thanks nikki, that's the code it is.
