Anyone managed to get a parking ticket revoked?

I got a parking ticket yesterday, £50 or £25 if I pay within 14 days. I deserved the ticket as I hadn't paid and displayed. However the background is that I had a hospital appointment and parked in the council carpark next the the hospital (i.e. not sure that it is a specifically hospital car park, though half the car park is hospital staff permits only so it obviously is a car park for when you go to the hospital).

I had intended to get a ticket and naively assumed that £2.50 would be more than enough but they wanted £2.90 for up to 2 hours, no 1 hour option, and I didn't have enough on me, there was nothing else I could do, no cash machine nearby. I accept that I deserved a ticket but I think £2.90 for a hospital car park is outrageous. I didn't intentionally not pay, I just didn't have enough.

Do I have a leg to stand on or do I just have to suck it up and pay?

Sorry but I thnk you'll have to suck it up and pay

I have had 2 parking tickets revoked - with good reason, both were given to me when they shouldnt have.

But it sounds like you got yours for a valid reason, sorry. You say it is a council car park - so were you supposed to park there or not?

Well, it is outrageous, but sadly won't be seen as a valid grounds for appeal.

I appealed a ticket I got at 5.58pm when my car was parked directly under a notice that said it was a 'CPZ' - controlled parking zone - until 5.30. I sent the photos and everything. But because there is a kerbside notice further up the road that says it is a pay and display bay until 6pm (!!! two minutea after the ticket) they refused my appeal and I had to pay.

I have only successfully appealed when using DS's Blue Badge - once when I was a bit at fault but demnstrated how unclear and ambiguous thier instruction was, and another time when clearly the traffic warden had made a mistake.

Hospital car parking in S London is £5 an hour for the first hour and £2-50 every hour after that!!!

Symapthies over your ticket - Bad luck

I mean it was council run (I think - the parking notice is from the council). I know didn't have a ticket so I deserve the fine, I just think the price is ridiculous. But agree it is probably not going to get me out of it.

It is worth appealing. I had one revoked recently. I had an osteopathy appointment which over ran. I was heavily pregnant with impaired mobility which slowed me down. It was my fault for not getting a ticket for long enough but they did let me off. Actually they rejected it at first but then when I provided evidence of the appointment, they accepted it.

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 16/04/2010 15:11

Well, I have emailed them to appeal explaining the situation and assuring them that I did not intend not to pay but didn't have any other choice at the time. It's worth a shot I suppose. Don't expect much though.

I had a ticket overturned when I was parked outside my friend's house in a resident's only bay. Dd was a baby in a car seat at the time and I got the ticket in the time it took to take her inside the house and friend to dig out the visitors permit. The traffic warden was still in the street when I appeared with the permit and he agreed to back me up (I played on the very young baby aspect.)

DinahRod · 16/04/2010 15:24

Suck it up, I'm afraid, but 'tis a bugger.

Got a ticket parking in an empty bay outside a shop when in full-leg brace & using crutches to find out from the shop where to park to pick up a bulky item from their store. The only cheery aspect was that the waiting bus queue booed the parking warden!

It depends on who gave you ticket etc, whether they are authorised to do so, what the paperwork says etc. I will post details this evening of very good website (a forum)(where you post details of situation and various experts give their advice - I have used this a number of times for friends and 4 have won on appoeal - often on technicalities.

Yes, I think mine's been revoked (I'm still waiting for the final demand through the post and they still haven't sent it after 30 days). I overstayed my ticket by 40 mins in a pay and display, was queueing in the tax office so couldn't go back and get another ticket. Saw the t-warden writing the ticket as I approached, explained (nicely) the situation and she was totally not bothered (they work on commission in our town!!) but I said if she gave me a ticket I would complain and wouldn't be paying. Perhaps it worked.

Give it a try, especially if you have hospital documentation to back up your case.

When I was a student, I got one revoked by telling a bare-faced lie. I totally forgot to get a ticket in a pay and display carpark. The minute I remembered, I legged it back to the carpark, but it was too late. So what I did was...

I sent the ticket back to the council, with a letter saying something along the lines of "I don't understand why I have been given a fine, as I had paid for the carpark and displayed my ticket. I can only assume that the ticket was slightly out of view of the traffic warden. I am enclosing the carpark ticket as proof" and sent it off, with no ticket inside (obviously) The council wrote back pointing out that they couldn't find a ticket with my letter, so I wrote back insisting that I had sent it. They had no choice but to revoke the ticket.

At the time, I thought I was terribly clever, but am now totally about it and would never ever do anything like that now that I am a responsible grown up with a conscience.

EvilTwins · 18/04/2010 23:24

As in I sent the parking ticket back to the council, not the pay and display ticket.

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 23/04/2010 13:48

UPDATE: I received a letter from the council today saying that just for this once they have cancelled the penalty notice, but that I must make sure to have the correct money in the future!

That was really nice of them under the circumstances and I have replied by email to say as such. Just shows it worth a try!
