travel insurance cancellation claim

Some of you may know my DH has recently been made redundant.

We are due to go on holiday in May and we have travel insurance so I am trying to cancel the trip (paid in full) and get the money back.

Our insurance does cover redundancy and as we paid for an excess waiver, there is no excess to pay so we should get the full cost of the holiday back and my DH can use the money to re-train.

When I called the insurance company, they said they will look at the claim, and I need to send in a cancellation invoice from the holiday company.

It worries me slightly that we might end up with no refund and no holiday if I cancel the trip and the insurance company go on to refuse the claim.

Is this normal proceedure?

yes its very normal, my husband and i had to cancel a holiday at very short notice as he was diagnosed with cancer. we had to send in all relevant documentation etc then we waited 3/4 weeks and got full refund, as you say if you are fully covered they have to pay out

it seems as though we are fully covered, but you know insurance companies!!!!!!!!

Yes its standard that they ask for proof of the cancellation of the holiday as part of the claim.

Most operate on the basis (re redundancy) that you were not on notice of redundancy or had been under consultation by the employer when booking and buying insurance/holiday for a claim to be valid.
