how much do you spend on groceries?

My ex husband lives in the UK and, as part of our divorce, he's provided an affidavit of means. This includes £720 per month for groceries for him and his partner. They live in her house. That seems very high to me for 2 people? I live in Ireland where groceries cost at least 40% more than the UK and half the country heads to Belfast and Newry to avail of cheaper prices but a couple here wouldn't spend the equivalent of £700+. Would welcome hearing some average spends from Mumsnetters. Thank you.

You're right that is far too high! For 2 people at least. In Belgium I spend about 150 euros a week but it is expensive here compared to UK.

That seems a lot for 2 people. I reckon we spend close to that some months, but that's for 5/6 people/kids.

I thought so! According to the affidavit, they made 14 purchases of groceries in February, a total of £786.55 including £127.44 on the 1st and £134.96 on the 2nd, £44.34 on the 4th and £77.54 on the 5th etc. Between June 09 and Feb 10, they spent £5,699.65 on groceries. They're obviously feeding the neighbourhood!

......or they're spending a lot on booze!

I spend about £45 a week on food for me and 2 pre-schoolers.

I spend that in the height of summer and that includes feeding me DH, 2 DC's a dog and up to 6 B&B guests.

I probably spend about £550 a month - 3 adults, 2 DCs, 2 cats and a fondness for wine. He's taking the piss.

The answer is a lot more than we used to, but nothing like that amount. Supermarket bills average about £65 a week for me, DH, DS and two cats (I know I remember it being around £50 and my habits haven't changed ).

I usually spend £250ish a month on 1 adult 3 (large appetite children), I do buy fairly cheaply though.

If I buy free range/organic, chuck a bottle of wine in etc etc then at most it's about £400 a month.......and that includes nappies and lots of cleaning stuff

Well I have to admit I spend about £100 a week on online shop plus extra bits as and when and it's only me, DP and 3 cats although I don't get their food on the weekly shop just the litter. This week it was £110 and that was no alcohol.

I know it is high but it is possible they could be spending that much (OP). Whether or or not it needs to be that high is a different matter, I could cut mine down massively if I needed to, I admit.

I should probably clarify that we scrimp and save on the shopping bill - not that you'd know by the end amount tbh.

£25 a week for me and DD (3)

I spend about £100 a week and I have a fondness for the finest ranges as well- always buy free range/outdoor reared/organic stuff and a shed load of wine/beer (me, dh and dd and the cat).

Thanks for all the posts. He hasn't provided any real vouching for the affidavit or receipts. He provided bank statements showing a standing order to his partner's account that supposedly covers bills, food and his contribution to her mortgage. Then there were pages of figures provided, signed by his partner, as being amounts for groceries, electricity, gas etc. but no actual bills were given. The whole point of this is to "prove" that he can't afford to visit his DD in Ireland by the way!

I get £140 a week for 'housekeeping' for a family of 3. That covers everything for the week - food, cleaning stuff, coffees out, lunches with mates, and 2 take-aways a week. DH pays for petrol and booze!!!

£65-70 per week for 2 adults , an older child and a 1 year old.

£50 per week for myself, DS and cat plus occassional feeding of my boyfriend and his children

£75 a week for 4 people. Includes all cleaning and pet stuff.

40 per week for ds (17 months), dh and I. Includes nappies, wipes..etc. Ocado delivery.
Why do you have to pay for his groceries?

Hi StarExpat, I don't have to pay for his groceries! He's provided an affidavit of means to my solicitor as part of our divorce and he's trying to prove that he can't afford to visit our DD in Ireland. He is claiming that he and his partner spend 720 per month on groceries, which I thought seemed very high as I know food is much cheaper in the UK than in Ireland, where I live. The responses I've had from Mumsnetters confirm I was right so I can only assume that they must be getting their food delivered from Harrods Food Hall! Thanks again to all who replied.

Between a 120.00/140.00 a week.

That is for me ,dp and 6 dc (and a dog)!
