Have you got premium bonds? Do you ever win?

I have got £2000 worth of bonds. I won twice in the first year of buying them, £50 each time. But nothing after that and I have had them 3 1/2 years now. Would I be better off with a good savings account?

well - you would struggle to find a good savings account at the moment!

We had the max amount for a while, and won nearly every month.

ds1 has nearly £1000, and has won a handful of times over 7 years.
ds2 had £500 and has won once in 2 years.

I think whether you would be better off with something else depends on your risk profile, what other savings/investment you have etc.

I won £25 this month. Have won £150 in some previous months. Some months I win nothing.

I'm ever hopeful to win it big.

pud1 · 16/03/2010 16:58

both my dd's have £500 each since birth. my eldest who is 2 hasnt won a bean but the youngest who is 7 months won £25 after about 3 months.

EccentricaGallumbits · 16/03/2010 17:00

yes. and no.

my mother wins almost every month

sb6699 · 16/03/2010 17:23

I have £10K worth and have had them for 2 years (its my savings for a house deposit).

Most months I win £25 and have won £50 a couple of times, nothing bigger.

fanjolina · 16/03/2010 17:32

I won within a few months of buying mine. But then forgot to notify them of a change of address - oops - so any winnings in the past few years I have not known of, and would prob have had the cheque banked by someone else

bellabelly · 16/03/2010 17:41

Fanjo - have you checked online? You need your Holder's Number and it looks it up for you.

fanjolina · 16/03/2010 17:44

really? i didn't know that. but would there be anything they could do if they sent a cheque to my old address 2 years ago and someone else had banked it?

am a bit scared to look in case I have missed out. and all because I was too disorganised to post the change of address form!

TrillianAstra · 16/03/2010 17:46

Calculations on if premium bonds are worth it

bellabelly · 16/03/2010 18:44

fanjolina - don't know about that but you could ask them, really unlikely that youve had a HUGE win - they would not send a really large cheque just through post surely? They'd contact you in person I think.

CockShore · 16/03/2010 18:46

if you have your holders number you can check on any winnings on the nsandi website. They can also notify you if you won in the past.,

cupofcoffee · 16/03/2010 19:19

I've got about £20 of bonds (which someone gave as present when I was born). I had forgotten about them until last yr when a £100 win turned up in the post.

HerHonesty · 16/03/2010 19:38

common thinking would suggest not

fanjolina · 16/03/2010 19:47

thanks bellabelly and cockshore - I will check

yellowcircle · 16/03/2010 19:53

I bought DS £100 worth of premium bonds 2 years ago. He won £25 a couple of months ago so that'll do me!

returningstress · 17/03/2010 18:18

Thank you all for the replies. I think I will keep them for now, hopefully I will win again soon.

I have had £500 for at least five years and never won a penny. grr. Keeps me daydreaming though.

activate · 19/03/2010 20:44

yes and yes

about once every 2 months

but we have maximum amount

bellabelly · 23/03/2010 13:05

Reckon this thread's been lucky for me - a cheque for £25 arrived on Saturday!

jaabaar · 29/03/2010 14:07

I was told that if you hold them for long it is worth selling and buying back as statistically you seem to win in the first years.

I keep some as well. Just look at it as playing lottery without loosing the stake!

Who knows, next year this time we might be millionaires!! )
