HM Revenue & Customs

I am presuming this is a scam, as firstly they would not have my email address, secondly i have only ever heard from IR by post, in a formal way, thirdly i work PAYE so any tax rebates are done through work afaik, fourthly, it is not the end of the tax year yet so how would they know, and fifthly as i have worked with my employer for years and years and years my 'fiscal activity' has not changed, other than normal payrises, sixthly, it was sent into my spam box, seventhly, there is a grammar mistake and, eighthly there is no reference number or anything to identify it is me as the intended recipient.

So, this is just to make you all aware of it, and if tempted, to ignore. I shall call them tomorrow to let them know.

Yes I've had one too. I'm sure it'll fool some people

Linnet · 23/02/2010 22:24

I've had two of these emails, sadly not for as much money as that though. And yes it is a hoax.

PavlovtheCat · 23/02/2010 22:29

linnet indeed the amount of money was the first clue! If it had been, for example, for £2, would be more realistic eh? .

Its a new one though, i shall give them that. I still regularly get told how my lloyds/halifax/hsbc/other bank has locked me out and i need to provide security info to reactivate, i get about 5 of them each day! If only i had that many accounts!

This was mentioned on the news (BBC I think) a couple of nights ago. HMRC were issuing a warning of this scam.

PavlovtheCat · 23/02/2010 22:48

oh cool they know then, won't bother to call then! Have not seen the news for a while, other than the bbc/guardian (only as dh reads their sport section!) websites, guess i have not visited the financial page for a while either!

PavlovtheCat · 23/02/2010 23:06

OK but can you send me £100 by Western Union so I can buy the stamps to post the checque.

Kewcumber · 24/02/2010 10:09

I used to work for a company that ran online games and competitions (legit!) and we persistently had scammers using the name of some of our better known games pretending that they had won £1million to try to part people from their money.

MOst of the calls from the indiviudals used to come to me... I always used to say "well have you actually played any of our games? NO? well you haven;t won then have you!"

One poor woman form the USA has actually sent about £500 via Western Union to these crooks, they wanted £1,000 to insure and courier the money to her, but compromised on £500 when she didn't have £1000. Surely the negotiation should have tipped her off!

I put her in touch with the appropriate branch of the met police but I doubt she got anything back. I did feel very sorry for her, but honestly, what a pillock.

You are all far too gullible. I have been advised only recently by the "National Bureau of Interpol" that a large amount of my money has been blocked by some bastards working at the United Nations. Luckily for me the "National Bureau of Interpol" are on the case. Honestly. The United Nations? You can't trust anyone these days.
