Can you recommend a credit card please

I would like a credit card that I can manage online, that has a good, efficient service team that are easy to contact, that are available around the clock and that don't make mistakes. Interest charges aren't an issue as I always pay it off in full.

I already have an Egg card which I'm fairly happy with but I need another one for when they put a stop on my card as it takes them about 24 hours to sort it out by email and it's a pain to contact them by phone. My normal card behaviour seems to be quite suspicious as every card I've ever had has been stopped on a regular basis while they check my transactions so it makes sense for me to have at least two so I don't get caught short at the till in Waitrose (as happened today).

Thanks in advance.

I was going to suggest Egg as I have been very impressed by them - whenever there is a query with mine they ring me immediately. Mind you, as you said, they do regard most of my spending as suspicious.

I also have an abbey national card which has never given me any problems. I manage it online and whenever I have needed to speak to someone I haven't had any problems

Egg ring you! I wouldn't mind so much if they did that for me, but for some reason they write to me. So I almost always find out that they have stopped my card because it gets refused somewhere and then I get the letter a day or two later.

I used to also have a Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, but they were taken over by Barclaycard who were unbelieveably useless. Their helpline used to close at 8pm and they would never let a flight booking go through. At the time DH was working in Amsterdam so I used to book a flight every month. I would settle down to book the flight after DS was in bed, it would be refused, the helpline would be closed. Then the next day the helpline would assure me that they only stopped unusual transactions and, as I booked a flight every single month it was unlikely that I would be refused again. Next month same thing.

They ring me pronto!
In fact, last week I transferred £10 to a betting website to place a bet on the 6 nations and the phone rang about 45 seconds after I tried to transfier the money.
If they can't get me at home they ring my mobile!

Have you set up your phone details in your egg profile?

bran · 20/02/2010 21:50

I must double check on that, thanks, if I haven't I'll do it now. It might make things simpler in the future.

It certainly prevents you being without a card - however, it means that DH (who usually answers the phone)always knows if I have been shoppping!

I checked and I had a digit wrong in my home phone number. Hopefully next time they will phone me.

They still haven't confirmed that my card has been unblocked, which is getting to be a bit of a pain in the arse.

It would still be a good idea have another one so bumping for anyone elses recommendations. Surely someone out there must have a credit card that they are happy with and isn't Egg.

I have a tesco one which I am very happy with and which I "manage" online - I say "manage" because I have it set up to clear on a direct debit every month, but I can look at my statements, recent transactions etc online.

bran · 21/02/2010 15:21

Do you know who operates the card for Tesco ChasingSquirrels? It's usually MBNA or HSBC. I wouldn't touch MBNA as I didn't find them particularly good in the past.

I'm wondering about Smile or Virgin Money. Smile do a cashback deal and get a good score on Which.

no idea sorry.
I use mine for everything, mainly because of the clubcard points, but I have an old one which has a better deal on points than the new ones.
Ex used to use it for his expenses, so it used to have a lots of spend all over the place.
Don't recall ever having it stopped.

suitejudyblue · 21/02/2010 15:50

I'd second Tesco, I can check my spending online and although I don't ususally need to call them I've found them to be OK if I do but the phone menu system takes ages to get through to a person (they are probably all like that though).
The points mount up pretty quickly, I don't spend loads but get at least £30 per quarter although most of these come from shopping at Tesco.
I don't know who operates it for them all I know is that its done through Bank of Scotland.

Given that you shop in Waitrose... get the John Lewis card. When you pay for goods in a JLP store (for example Waitrose) you get points, which get converted to money off vouchers later on. You can register the card in individual Waitrose stores, so you can use the barcode scanners for self-shop - so no queueing at the tills.

I manage my card fully online, though get paper statements which helps to remind me when to pay the bill.

When the security department spotted my card details being used overseas, they quickly called me to check where I was... in Kew gardens at the time as it so happened... and thus quickly sorted out a replacement card. No clue as to how someone else got my card details... it hasn't happened since... so maybe a rogue website - I use the card quite a bit for internet shopping.

duckyfuzz · 21/02/2010 19:21

virgin is through mbna

tesco I have foudn good so far, not sure who runs it, will check,

can't fault the JL one, getting vouchers is fab!

bran · 21/02/2010 22:37

The Waitrose one might be good, thanks NN. I virtually never shop at Tesco because I'm a dreadful food snob there isn't one near me.

I don't shop there either, but you still get clubcard points for using it for your shopping, no matter where it is!
