Financial 'makeover' - what professional does this?

I am a bit thick and woolly when it comes to money - and Maths and I want an independent appraisal of 'where I'm at' financially and don't know what kind of professional might give this?

I'm NOT looking for advice on specific things like life-insurance/pensions/investments etc. I AM looking for someone to look at all my income and expenses and finances, my future plans and give me some solid and independent advice on what I need to consider etc.

So I don't think an Independent Financial Advisor, either attached to a bank/ building so. etc or not, is quite what I need.

The closest I can get to what I want is the kind of personal overhaul of finances that's in the Saturday Times newspaper each week (an individual or couple are selected) - except I want this done privately, not publicly.

Does anyone know what sort of professional I should be looking for to help and how much it'd cost?

have a look at money saving expeert site - loads of diy make over stuff. IFAs only want to sell you insurance or equity based investments, or estate plan for you.

I used to do this for a law firm, generally when people had hit rock bottom and we were trying to stave off bankruptcy/IVAs. You might be able to find one that does a free half hour advice thingy - a lot of them do.
Any good personal accountant will also do something similar. Look for charges of £150 to £200 per hour if they are any good (and I'd go for a well known local firm or a top five firm, not a one man band).
Also CAB are downright bloody brilliant. Otherwise try www.moneysavingexpert.com/
Hope that helps,

Thanks for the advice. What I'm needing is someone to sit down with me and look at facts and figures re. my expenditure and outgoings - now and across the next decades really and tell me whether I'm fine/ need to consider other things/ in dire straits for the future....someone who can actually work out the sums for me.
