Friends son did a job in his home city (lives down south normally) and was paid obviously.

Can he claim expenses for his board and lodgings although he stayed at home? and does he need receipts.

Also he has to register before the 31st but does he pay on the 31st or does he get a couple of weeks to pay.

She only has sketchy details and son does not have a lot of money as his normal job has just informed him that he will now be paid monthly so wont have money till the end of the month. They have been sending all his mail to his old address and was not informed of the change as he was at home anyway.

If you understand all this can anyone advise.

DH did his tax return and the balance of his tax has to be paid by the 31st.

you cant claim for expenses that he hasnt incurred as that is fraud

alypaly · 27/01/2010 20:29

you would have to produce receipts in oreder to claim expenses from hois company or even he is self employed. If he is self employed he would only get vat back on his expenses i think...it becomes abit more complicated when self employed and whether you are a sole trader or not

"Can he claim expenses for his board and lodgings although he stayed at home?"

no, as alypaly said, if he doesn, he's breaking the law.

ideally you are supposed to pay by the 31st, but if you don't, the interest charged on the debt is only small.

When I say he stayed at home I meant with his parents. He was here for 2 months. He has a mortgage down south. Others stayed in a hotel but he chose to stay with parents.

It doesn't matter. Others had to pay for their accommodation, he didn't. Therefore he's got no expenses to claim.

Thanks I will pass it on.

And if he hasn't registered yet, that takes an age. You have to phone them, wait at least a week for a UTR number, log on, email for an activation code (another week), then fill in the online form. Then you have to submit it, wait for them to reply, (although I've just by-passsed this bit), then pay it. And it has to clear before the 31st so you don't get a) fined and b) interest charged.
Not looking likely, I'm afraid.

I use my debit private card for all my business expenses -- then I I claim this back quarterly from my ltd co which I own. I have lost a box of reciepts ... will the transaction on my bank statement suffice?
