Overpayment of wages after leaving , where do we stand ?

My dp resigned from his job last summer from a big bank, as it was a customer facing job he was sent on gardening leave for his notice period.
When he met his manager to return laptop etc and sign his signing off papers he realised the papers had someone elses (similair) name on.
So he has never officially signed his own leaving papers.
But he got all the paperwork needed to start new job etc.
He then gets a full months pay the following month which he shouldn't have got , he was owed holiday pay and notice though.
He rings them to tell them and they say they will look into it.
He then gets paid again the following month.
Again he rings them and they agree to stop the wage and sort out what he owes them.
He then doesn't hear anything so contacts them and the original person dealing with it has left.
He then recieves letter stating that they will take the full two months wages out of his account in two days.
Given 3/4 of the first month payment was his he contacts them again. They refuse to stop the collection and tell him to contact his old boss as only he can stop it ??
He is on holiday so dp ends up having to close his bank account as the money would not be there for them to collect.
We have now recieved two letters saying that this debt will be passed onto debt collectors unless we pay it in full
Dp has sent two letters to them (rather than phonecalls) asking for the breakdown of what we actually owe them taking into account his holiday and notice pay.
We have still not heard anything since before xmas.

What should we do from here ? Am so worried that this will be passed on to a collection agancy but don't see a way around it! We have the money sat in a savings account so not worried about paying it back.

(sorry it's long)

What a lot of idiots. It sounds as though DP needs to try different avenues, as the people he has been contacting so far haven't got a clue.
