As a married non-earner, can I open a savins account in just my name so as not to pay savers tax?

So we get charged 20% tax on the interest on our savings (which are substantial as we ave sold our house and not bought anywhere yet). But as a non-earner, I am entitled to a tax free allowance before I start paying the savings tax. So, even though I am married to an earner, if I open a savings account in just my name, I would not pay the tax? Is this right?

Absolutely right - do it asap! I work for an Independent financial advisers and we always get our clients to do that.

Yes, unless they've changed the rules since I did it. You have to fill in a form (a something-85 I think) to confirm that you're not a taxpayer & then the interest is paid tax-free, though if the interest is more than the tax allowance, you'd have to pay something.

IlanaK, yes you're right, lots of people do this. Also, even if the money's in joint names and you're a non-tax payer you should only be paying the tax on his half, so 10%. Ask your bank, they'll be able to print some forms off for you to sign.

I do have a job, but I earn under the tax allowance (by a lot), so can I still do this? I am on PAYE, but with no tax being taken.

Are you a UK national & resident? Rules can be a bit different otherwise, depending on status.

IlanaK · 18/01/2010 21:48

Yes, UK passport holder and resident. Ok, must get onto this.
