Life Insurance - Can you tell me which Insurance might consider insuring someone who had a medical problem in the past?

No insurer would touch dh with a bargepole due to an op he had last year even though he is back to where he was before or even better. His doctor told him there's no reason for him to be insured as his health is perfect. We have tried a few and after writing to GP etc etc they always said no.

Sorry I am ina rush due to DD2 starving.

TIA

What sort of op was it ? Specialist groups like British Heart Foundation and DiabetesUk have info on insurers who will cover people with related illnesses

There are specialist companies on the web site that will insure people.
these guys are brokers and may be able to point you in the right direction

That said I tibnk a year may not be long enough. With cancer for example some companies want 4 years or more clear

AllQuietOnThePippisFront · 18/01/2010 20:46

I see. Well thanks a lot will check them as well.
I have also googled something and so now thanks to you all we have got 3 more options.

You need a broker (because health insurance is a horribly complex market you need someone to look at your specific situation). Try the British Insurance Brokers' Association - 0870 950 1790 or the specialist health insurance brokers' organisation, the Association of Medical Insurance Intermediaries (AMII).

edam · 19/01/2010 16:21

Or Which? says generally you are better off putting the money you'd spend on private medical insurance into a savings pot in case you ever need to jump the queue.

AllQuietOnThePippisFront · 19/01/2010 16:41

Thanks Edam, yes you are probably right it is a complex one for him. Would one need to go to a broker even when there's no medical history there, like me? I just did it directly with the insurance. I am kicking myself as I had done one for DH before that happened only to stop it temporarily. Gosh it was cheap and hassle free. And now...

Re Private Health care does Which? means that for everybode or for those who would not be insured?

edam, I think the Op wants life insurance, not private health insurance?

Allquiet, this is a matter close to my heart (and about to become more of an issue, but that's another thread.)

Luckily we already had some life insurance in place for dh (though probably not enough now we have dcs). Am trying not to think about what we do when that policy runs out!

How about his workplace? If he is employed, some employers offer a "death in service" benefit, often linked to the pension...

ThingumyandBob · 19/01/2010 17:56

Scottish Widows may well do, I used to work in a department that did life cover and things and remember them insuring someone in remission from quite a hefty illness.

edam · 19/01/2010 18:47

oops Decor is right, OP did say life insurance in the title, not PMI! But the point about going to a broker still stands.

Which? means for everybody. And some docs I know who advise the govt on health policy agree. Get some savings you can dip into if you ever need private treatment rather than paying through the nose for insurance that may well not cover you comprehensively. PMI policies are full of exclusions and limitations.
