hmmm, think i'll tag along for the ride - i have switched to supermarket own brands, it makes a big difference - and some of the stuff is actually better!

SleighGirl · 03/01/2010 22:15

moneysavingexpert.com will be your bible.

Have you checked you are on the cheapest
phone/internet
mobile
house insurance
insurances
car insurance
fuel provider
mortgage?

ninah · 03/01/2010 22:16

you can live more cheaply than you expect
charity shops, jumble sales, fairs etc for clothes, customise them
bulk buy pasta and rice
shoulder of lamb is cheaper than leg of lamb
casserole/slow cooker stuff
grow your own veg
ebay
mainly getting into the habit of looking for deals and not buying unecessary stuff
plus new year is a good time for a clear out and you can car boot what you no longer use

SleighGirl · 03/01/2010 22:16

meal plan
use less electricity - turn off lights, stop leaving things on standby, turn thermostat down 1 degree, shorter showers
cook in bulk and reheat the next day.
walk more use car/transport less
drink less alcohol!

ninah · 03/01/2010 22:17

oh be fair you need the alcohol

make sure you have checked that you are on the best tariffs for gas./elec, insurance/mortgage/rent

write down exactly what you have coming in and what you have going out of your accounts, not forgetting food shops and the little things that add up, bus fare, taxi fare, car parking, toddler group payments etc

only take cash in your purse then you can't spend on cards and unwittingly let the amounts add up over each week

budget daily, meal plan and don't deviate

make sure you don't add to spending by buying the "odd" magazine and the "odd" mascara that you don't really need

eat less meat and more vegetarian meals - stews and soups are great for economical meals and perfect for this cold weather

for longterm increase in finances do your best to pay off all the debts you have, starting with the ones on the highest apr and once you have made good progress with those and are debt free then start to look at how best to put away a bit of money at the end of each month

main thing is to keep a weekly check on everything that has gone in and out of your wallet then you can get a realistic look at what can be cut down

Thanks for replies
lucyellensmumagain - we use own brands for everything except coffee and baked beans
SleighGirl = we have done this
Menu planning - I do this on and off. I follow slimming world so I am sure it would help my weight loss and my pocket if I strated to this weekly.
I have bought a cheap diary to write down daily spending, Dh going to do it too. That starts tomorrow.
displayuntiltwelfthnight - will start leaving my card at home. that should stop impulse buys.
I am feeling inspired!!!
