Is (as I think) ours excessive at 150 a week for 2 adults and 1 dc oh and one large cat-includes cleaning products cat food and litter-no personal toiletries a little booze - maybe a couple of bottles of wine-lunches out for all of us so no packed lunches included just evening meal- no ready meals
Thoughts please- when I have told DH about threadson MN where people spend 40 quid he is incredulous !

probably around £60
1 adult, 7yo & 3yo (boys spend 1 night & 1 24 hour period not here)
includes packed lunches for 7yo and myself, home lunches for 3yo plus my mum 3 days a week
no booze, no fags
no animals
includes cleaning products

Harriedandflustered · 03/01/2010 12:51

Well I spend around £150 a week on a family of four. No weekday lunches included and we only eat at home in the evenings twice midweek (Mondays and Fridays).

I know we could cut down on our weekly expenditure by not buying organic or free-range, not buying expensive ingredients, and by shopping around a lot more. But I don't have time to do more than one weekly shop.

MintyCandyCane · 03/01/2010 12:53

£70 - I don't know how the £40 people do it I am reading those threads and trying to learn. We also don't buy any alcohol but we do have pets to feed. 2 adults here and 3 kids two of which are as big as me now.

AnnieBeansMum · 03/01/2010 12:53

We spend around £70 a week (me, DH and DD who's 2). That includes food and litter for 2 cats as well.

ShinyAndNew · 03/01/2010 12:54

We do our big shop fortnightly and it usually comes to about £100-£150. I top up during the week though on milk, bread, cheese, bananas etc.

That's for two adults and two children, plus many many guests.

elliepac · 03/01/2010 12:55

ours is around £60-70. 2 adults, DS (6) and dd (1). this includes packed lunches for me and dh but ds has school lunch and tea at cm's and dd has lunch and tea at cm's during the week. it also includes cleaning products and catfood x 2. i think it's all relative. i could quite easily spend £150 but haven't got the money to. if you can afford to spend that then that's fine .

thelunar66 · 03/01/2010 12:58

£90 - £100

Me, DH and teenage DS.

That includes everything.. cleaning stuff, bog roll etc.

We do buy quite a lot of alcohol though

bebesequin · 03/01/2010 13:01

Time is a factor go to one supermarket only 5 mins away- as work F/T -Know I could save more if I used ALDI LIDL etc- and am not good at checking that we actually need dishwasher tabs or loo rolls so tend to duplicate sometimes
Also buy a lot of meat as DH big meat eater
Must try harder!

We do a monthly shop which is about £180 (split roughly 60:40 between Tesco online and Lidl) and then probably around £120/150 over the rest of the month topping up fruit and fridge stuff as needed.

2 adults, 1 child that eats as much as an adult, 2 smaller ones and a cat. DCs all have packed lunches, and we rarely eat out/have a takeaway. However, we always eat at MILs on Saturday night, and she cooks for an army so half the time we have enough leftovers from that for one meal.

southeastastra · 03/01/2010 13:02

it depends though if you buy quality meat etc which is worth paying for if you can afford it.

i spend about £100

magnolia74 · 03/01/2010 13:03

We are a family of 7 plus a dog and 2 cats and spend roughly £130 a week.
Thats with fresh meat and veg daily but we make a lot from scratch and its much cheaper.

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 03/01/2010 13:03

I can do it (quite healthily and with lots) for about £60, that's my weekly aim, gone a little OTT last few weeks but back to normal on Monday. That's for 2 adults and 1 DS all breakfasts/lunches/suppers.

Lonicera · 03/01/2010 13:04

Ours is about £150 pw.
Family of four plus a cat, packed lunches for the kids.
We seem to spend a lot on meat - dh is fond of expensive cuts, plus we always have a Sunday joint.

LauraIngallsWilder · 03/01/2010 13:04

Our household is one adult (me) and two dc 8 and 5 - weekly shopping bill is usually £60 in tescos plus another £10 midweek - that total covers all our meals for 7days

Sometimes its nearer £80/90 in tescos but that is usually because I have bought a printer cartridge or something

No alcohol, ciggies or pets to buy for
Plus we are veggie which I think helps

cocohasleftthebuilding · 03/01/2010 13:05

2 adults and 2 children £150 I'm trying to cut down by going to the butchers once a week rather than just flinging in stuff at the supermarket.

Heqet · 03/01/2010 13:05

depends how much we've got!

I have done it on £200 a week, more sometimes.

I have done it on £25 a week (2 adults, 2 children and 4 cats!) We spent over a year like that. It was not nice. But we managed. I'm not sure how healthy we were though!

atm, we have £50 - £80 a week, for 2 adults, 2 children and 1 cat.

Potatoes and meat from farms. rest from supermarkets.

You find a way to make what you have got buy what you need. When we had £200+ we bought finest ranges, luxury foods, expensive household stuff... when we had £25 everything was basic ranges and we lived on potatoes +. You do what you have to do.

magnolia74 · 03/01/2010 13:07

Meat oesn't have to make it more expensive though. We but maybe a slightly larger chicken or joint of meat and use it for roast and then for curry or casserole the next day. Even a small bit of left over meat can be enough minced up and used for chilli

Batteryhuman · 03/01/2010 13:11

About £110 plus a Riverford veg box for 4 adults (DS1 and 2 are 18 and 16) and DS3 age 8. Roast always does 2 or 3 meals.

MitchyInge · 03/01/2010 13:12

haven't bought anything other than dvds from supermarkets for AGES (mainly because they are such scary places over Christmas)

living on takeaways and stuff from the farm shop and corner shop, but during more lavish times was easily spending £300 a week in Waitrose (that included a lot of cigarettes, fresh flowers and ready meals and booze) including £££ on meals out too tho

probably do spend at least £150 a week, household has just reduced in size again to one teenager and one 10yo and me, and 3 cats (dog food is from feed shop not supermarket)

Miggsie · 03/01/2010 13:12

I spend about £120 a month, but this is because I try to use small shops for meat and have veg and milk delivered.

So really I am buying toilet roll, dishwasher tablets and storecupboard stuff like pasta from the supermarkets.

TrillianAstra · 03/01/2010 13:13

2 adults, no children, no pets, prob £60 a week, including some but not all of the booze.

(does include lunches, and we are meat-eaters)

Could spend less but it wouldn't be as nice. Could easily spend quite a bit more.

MrsJohnDeere · 03/01/2010 13:13

Easily £200 per week if dh isn't working away. 2 adults, 2 dcs (1 in nappies). Includes lunches for 3 of us, and we never eat out or have takeaways.

ellielou02 · 03/01/2010 13:14

Approx £100 for 2 adults 2 children but usually have to top up during the week. No pets 1 or 2 bottle of wine and cleaning products.

ruddynorah · 03/01/2010 13:19

big shop about every 2 weeks £100 ish tesco online. we don't eat meat, and rarely buy alcohol. that includes cleaning stuff (though mostly we use mocrofibre cloths and no products) and toiletries. we are me, dh, dd 3.5 and ds 6 wks.

i also top up with treat type stuff from m&s, but i work there so get 20% discount. probably spend another £20 a week there.

MarthaFarquhar · 03/01/2010 13:19

I am always staggered by the people with very low bills.

I spent £88 today for me, DH, DD and 2 cats - cat litter always seems to add on a lot. Today was maybe a tenner or so dearer than usual as we needed loads of non food stuff (shampoos, loo roll, laundry liquid etc), which always bumps the bill up.

We will probably need another loaf of bread, but otherwise this is 7 days worth of food including packed lunches for us all.
