I'm a single parent but i work 30hrs, am i entitled to Housing Benefit?

I work 30 hrs a week and receive £240 tax credits a week, as my salary is low and i am a single parent of 2. I am thinking of selling my house as cant afford mortgage.

I went on my local authority site which told me i was only entitled to £8 per wk HB, but then on the Entitledto site it states i am entitled to £138 per wk!
Also rang my council but they didnt call back.
I do receive child maintenance but apparently that is disregarded.
i live in west sussex.

Also does anyone know of any letting agents in w sussex who do accept tenants who receive HB?

It depends on what sort of property you rent and your council's definitions of what is an appropriately-sized property for you and your family AND if you sell that house and have over £6000 from it, you generally are not eligible for HB at all.

Well i am entitled to a 3-bed house as have 2 different gender dc. i wont have much profit from sale of house, and i owe my mum a lot of money too.

'Well i am entitled to a 3-bed house as have 2 different gender dc. i wont have much profit from sale of house, and i owe my mum a lot of money too.'

Are they over the age of 10?

And they don't care if you have debts, all they care about is the amount of profit you realise from the sale. Jettisoning it is seen as willful deprivation of capital and means you lose any entitlement.

Really, it depends on your particular council as to what the allowance is in your area.

Sorry i didnt mean my comment to sound arrogant.
Yes one of my children is over 10, so on the site it states we would need 3 beds.

I'm a lone parent, work 21 hours a week, get tax credits and am not entitled to HB, I only have one DD.

As expat says it very much varies from council to council and on what they assess properties are worth etc.

Also, I believe, if you make more than £6k from selling your house you wont be entitled.

It's probably worth trying to get an appointment with an advisor at your local council offices.

allgonebellyup · 28/12/2009 22:09

Thanks. Hmm, looking doubtful now then. I wonder why the Entitledto site says i am allowed £138 HB per week?!!

I have always had really bizarre results from entitledto tbh.

I would definitely talk it through with someone before you make a decision, even a lone parent advisor at the job centre might be able to help?

ElizabethWakefield · 28/12/2009 22:17

I do realise you wouldn't just sell your house on a whim, I know my post reads a bit like that

allgonebellyup · 28/12/2009 22:18

oh i would sell my house on a whim, i am like that! Then i would regret it for the rest of my days....!

I am married with 3 children, DH works 34 hrs per week, and we get around the same amount of CTC/WTC as you. We get around £100 HB per week (but some of that is disabled child premium). You should get at least something.

expatinscotland · 28/12/2009 23:12

disabled child premium does make a HUGE difference, though, tbh.

honestly, elizabeth is right, it's worth it to see someone at your council in person because it's going to vary big time.

allgonebellyup · 29/12/2009 09:43

ok thanks.
I have actually just received an email from the council this morning saying i should be entitled to £77 HB per week, as i get the £240 tax credits a week.

But i forgot to tell the lady that £70 of that £240 goes on childcare; so would i be due to receive a little bit more do you think??

Thanks

Meant to add, i get that much tax credits as i have declared the childcare, and tax credits help to pay for this.

No.

They calculate your entitlement on gross sums, not on what you do with the money.

Also, I don't understand. Aren't you still a homeowner?

If so, then all this is hypothetical based on what your rent will be.

expatinscotland · 29/12/2009 11:31

it's also dependent upon your not realising over £6000 in profit from the sale of your home.
