After your bills, mortgage and essentials (ie food, petrol) have been paid, how much do you have left over each month?

I'm just curious as I am trying to see if I will be able to get by on about £0 leftover once we remortgage- eeeeek.

About 2000.00 but we both work and have studied hard for a long time now.

magnolia74 · 28/12/2009 21:23

£0!!!
Which may explain why we are £1000 in rent arrears on top of numerous other debts

tackyChristmastreedelivery · 28/12/2009 21:26

Me too. Sadly the NHS doesn't reward you for it.

LastOfTheMulledWine · 28/12/2009 21:44

We have 5 degrees between us.

Still have no money.

bonkerz · 28/12/2009 21:48

currently we are running at -£150 PER MONTH, 4 months ago we were -£500 PER MONTH so i got a part time job. we have cancelled non essentials like TV channels and down graded everything we could, we are doing car shares to save petrol and once DD is at school in Sept i can work more hours......untill then we are very grateful to the bank for allowing our overdraft!

DavidTennantAteMyHeart · 28/12/2009 22:16

About £500 on paper but never anything by the end of the month. I don't understand where it goes. It's taken me three months to get enough together for a washing machine.

NewYearNewKnickers0nMaHead · 29/12/2009 17:38

Nothing whatsoever. I am on my own now so paying for everything.

MarthaFarquhar · 29/12/2009 17:42

about £100 on paper. which is normally just enough to deal with whatever unforeseen disaster has befallen the house (this month - car repairs) and a takeway dinner.

knicknack · 29/12/2009 17:56

About £30. I am a single parent with 2 ds' and also have my younger brother living with us but i get tax credit and child benefit for him too. After, bills, food, clothing, haircuts, rent top up, and bus pass fees for brother we have about £30 a week left which usually goes on fun activities and days out for us all or into my boys' savings account. Am starting a night course in health and social care soon hopefully so bus pass for myself is going to be another expense.

between £400-£500 pm, but we scrimp on EVERYTHING to achieve this.

JackTheHallsWithBauersOfHolly · 29/12/2009 18:19

Nothing here either, by payday/tax credit day we are normally running on empty, if we have anything spare we pay off the credit card as we use it to pay for car insurance (its cheaper to pay it in a full whack and use 0% card) so even if we have £100 on paper (which we possibly do) then that goes.
I include DD2's playgroup and one softplay trip a week as essentials though so thats probably a tenner a week. Nothing for emergencies though, thats why we try and clear the card as quickly as possible.

TinyPawz · 30/12/2009 00:07

On paper about £100, but in reality, nothing. I simply don't know where is goes. I think there are elves in my purse

saramoon · 30/12/2009 09:57

Used to be about £150 a month but like people say on here it just goes, over 1 month it is not very much. Car failed MOT this month and that was nearly £500 so we are now in our overdraft and have will have nothing left at the end of the month for a while.

Pwsimerimew · 30/12/2009 14:44

It's soooooo unfair.

tigerbear · 30/12/2009 14:50

After bills and mortgage, approx £1500 left over. The amount we spend on food varies considerably as we never do a weekly or monthly shop, and we eat out lots.

Pwsimerimew · 30/12/2009 15:09

Lucky you tiger bear. YOu have left over double what I get in the first place....that's my wage - not including DH wage.
What's your job and are there any vacancies?

Matchingcardiganandtop · 30/12/2009 15:18

Probably about £2K although we save about half of that. Out of that though come all of dd classes which are not an essential.

I could not live with so little to spare tbh as every month something comes up.

tackyChristmastreedelivery · 30/12/2009 15:44

If I had 2k to spend.....wow....

I'd be having a jolly old time! Wow.I hope you enjoy it. It must be lovely to be able to save and feel safe too. Good on ya.

Really though, if I could go back I would do something else. Career wise I mean. I crave that security.

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 30/12/2009 15:47

It varies hugely. £-3000 to + £3000. Very difficult, sometimes, budgeting on self employed earnings.

Matchingcardiganandtop · 30/12/2009 15:48

I don't have an amazingly well paid job - am a teacher.

We had a huge financial meltdown last year so have had to make cutbacks and we have to save to replace the money we lost selling our house and other bills. We live a very very simple life, small houe, no foriegn holidays, oldish car.

madmissy · 30/12/2009 15:51

nothing.

tackyChristmastreedelivery · 30/12/2009 15:53

When I look at other people, I wonder how do they have a newish car, how can they have afford the service charges. Where do they get money to paint the ouotside of their houses.

It's all a mystery to me. I live in an area of deprivation, and feel the poorest on the street. Boring!!!
They all seem to be off to the cinema and getting their hair done. I've just spent my Christmas present money on dd's new shoes and a trip to the chiropractor. Pah!

Ah well, have my health.

satc2bringiton · 30/12/2009 15:54

We have about £2000.00 - we save some but the rest just seems to go on other stuff like swim lessons, b day pressies etc etc

Still never seem to have much money!

Matchingcardiganandtop · 30/12/2009 15:55

We go out as a family regularly, eat out at least once a week, cinema at least once a month, day out etc. Infact once we have paid the big bills that is our biggest expense.

We don't have new cars though.
