we dont have a mortgage as we are council tenants, however we are in debt, not loads and we can afford to pay out each month, just wondering apart from a mortgage,is anyone else in "debt" creditcards/loans etc
or is it just us

teameric · 10/12/2009 09:51

We are council tenants too, I paid off my loan and credit cards a while ago, but have now run up a quite a bit of debt on my catalogue which my DH thinks I've got rid of , I can't really afford to pay back even the minimum at the moment because I'm not working and DH will wonder where the money has gone. I'm due back to work in Jan though so hope I can sort it out then without him knowing (I hate lying to him but he is very careful with money and he'll kill me if he finds out!)

I think we will be - we were fighting to keep level each month anyway - there has just been a budget in the country we live in which had slashed off 6,500 off our income and I'd say we've screwed, especially if anyone get ill (also have to pay for GPs and medicines in full in this country)

minervaitalica · 10/12/2009 12:41

No - no debt here apart from mortgage - never had any besides student loan really.

Do not get depressed about it though - it happens but as long as you have a repayment plan in mind and you stick to it, then there is no need to panic.

Yummiestmum333 · 11/12/2009 11:26

Yep, we were in a lot of debt too, in the end we had to do a debt management plan.

I work from home now too, I only earn about £100 per week but it all helps.

If anyone is interested in the company I work for, feel free to email me at [email protected] and I can send you the details.

MuppetsMuggle · 11/12/2009 11:32

I'm a council tenant and in debt - not by alot now but is hard. Do try not to get to depressed about it though, you'll get through it.

YM333 - i've emailed you

KEAWYED · 11/12/2009 16:12

I have to YM333

Mousey84 · 11/12/2009 16:23

OP, you are certainly not alone.

Do you have a realistic repayment plan sorted? I think it can be empowering to have one - you feel in control of the debt rather than them controlling you! Make sure its something you can stick to though.

I have heard Christians Against Poverty are good. You dont have to be christian to speak with them. CAB are good too. Or just do a plan by yourself if you dont want to chat about it.

em83 · 12/12/2009 08:06

ym333 have emailed you thanx
we can afford to make payments as it stands and still have a bit left, i done my own plan a while back abd it seems 2 be working out good for now
just wish the next directory didnt have so many nice clothes in for my kids.....

I've been in debt for years and everytime I think I am getting somewhere, something else happens.

XH left me with about 20k debt all in my name (clever bastard).... that was about 2.5yrs ago. Now have 11.5k. Slowly making a dend init.

I think 'Must do is a great master'. You always manage and if you are feeling overwhelmed, go to CAB. They can help.

Chin up

expatinscotland · 12/12/2009 20:57

yes.

we're council tenants and about £7k in debt.

all started with a cock up by tax credits about 4 years ago and we racked up a few grand in debt we were never able to pay off.

jobhuntersrus · 12/12/2009 21:05

Yes badly. Hoping to remortgage next year and sort it all out if we can. Ours has been run up due to me choosing to be at home with the kids and that meant no spare money so any out of the ordinary expenditure ended up on cards. There just always seemed to be something. Plus when we were younger we were a bit "live for today and sod tomorrow" which we are literally paying for now. Going back out to work in january so fingers crossed we will sort ourselves out. I do worry about it.

ShinyAndNew · 12/12/2009 21:08

We have a morgate, a credit card, a store card (though we only owe about £40 on this) a Next account, a Very account, TV on IFC and I think that's it. But DH deals with that.

I deal with the 'fun money' for alcohol and clothes

MrsMattie · 12/12/2009 21:10

Big mortgage, couple of credit cards between us usually up to the hilt. We can manage it. Would rather be debt-free, though.

DisElfchanted3 · 12/12/2009 21:13

Yes me council tenant too.
Am going to sort it after Xmas, thry to pay off as much as we can, wanting to be debt free by next Xmas. Will be hard work though as I have a fair bit to pay off 1 year of loan left which is a big amount each month and the rest if shitty catalouges , overdraft and another debt owed to Abbey National

Am really going to be living off basics 2010 as Im not spending a penny - just gettig rid of this, its so stressful.
