Why have I got a letter from tax credit questioning if I am single

I have just receievd a letter from Claimant compliance from tax credits saying we are writing to make sure I am getting the right amount of money and then letting me know what is classed as a couple or being single.

I have been separated for about 3 years and my circumstances have not changed so I am wondering why I received this letter.

At the end of the letter it says read the enclosed fact sheet but there wasn't one in the envelope. It says if I have anything I want to talk about to ring them.

Should I ingore this letter or ring them? Does anyone know what this fact sheet is.

I am really worried as I would lose my home if they stopped my tax credits.

No, just ring them and say about the letter you have received - if you are single then you have nothing to worry about.

I had someone doing a survey for local council (had ID of course) but was only seeing specific houses she said. I then had to confirm name, address that it was just dd and I that lived here etc. A few days later I had my renewal form to confirm I get a single person's council tax/reduction thing. Coincidence ??

don't worry, you're not being targetted. Periodically single households are sent this type of letter as some people forget to inform tax credits of a partner so it's just a reminder type thing. The factsheet just gives general info about what would be a couple (as in someone who has a partner who only stays 3 nights a week but splits all household bills etc..)

If you're still single, just ignore the letter.

Thank you for your help. I hate having to claim this credit anyway but don't earn a lot of money so have to. I always panic when I get a letter from Inland revenue even though I fill in my claim forms honestly and put exact earnings and status down.

I had a phone call from the tax credits office today out of the blue asking the same question. They told me it was a new pilot scheme and asked a list of questions - hope its nothing to worry about they make you feel guilty even when you aren't!
