Just wondering, and am also concerned that other banks are going to follow suit, we also have an account with Alliance & Leicester and they have been charging 50 per day for ages although that is capped at £5 per month.

Nationwide is good but their online system is always a day behind so you cant be exact about funds!

I've never had a problem with Abbey.

Always polite in branch, easy to use online banking and quick to resolve any problems I've had.

I've got current accounts with Halifax and Nationwide and even before all the recent crap ref Halifax recently was thinking about dropping one.
I think I will stick with the Nationwide although one downside I've found is that transfers via online banking take longer, around 3 days whereas from my Halifax account to DH's account (HSBC) and some other accounts it is instantaneous.

Halifax customer service lacks, well, service

I am just about to give Lloydstsb the Vs as well and was going to see who people would recommend?

Bramshott · 08/12/2009 15:11

Smile is great if you are happy to do it all online and not go into a branch.

ChristmasMoon · 08/12/2009 15:12

I have to go in branch because I get paid by cheque (I know, unbelievable in this day and age).

E45 · 08/12/2009 15:15

First Direct are great.

Doodlez · 08/12/2009 15:16

FirstDirect. No contest.

Bramshott · 08/12/2009 15:20

With Smile I just pay in by post (I get paid by cheque too). It's a freepost address, and frankly it's easier to pop cheques in the post than find time to travel to a bank in any case (rural area)!

ChristmasMoon · 08/12/2009 15:23

How long from posting cheque for money to register Bramshott?

With firstdirect how do you pay in?

What are the down sides?

Bramshott · 08/12/2009 15:28

It seems to be fairly quick - 3-4 days? I have never had any go astray.

The only downside for me is that with no branches, if you want to arrange to take out a large cash sum, you have to do it over several days through the cashpoint.

ChristmasMoon · 08/12/2009 15:34

What's the max withdrawal per day?

My problem is my company are pretty bad at paying on time and I need the cheque to register ASAP to avoid charges etc. I would prefer a high street name I guess as one of the reasons I am so anoyed at Lloyds is constantly speaking to their call centres, today I walked into branch and had it out with them. Very theraputic!
