Do you have a joint account with DH/DP or keep your money separate?

I work part time and bring in approx 1/5th of our total income. At present my wages go directly into our joint account and dh adds a cheque from his business account into our account once a month. I take a set amount out each month and put it in my personal account to pay for stuff like my own clothes, mobile etc. It's okay but it feels a bit like an allowance and I'd like to be bit more financially independent.

How do you contribute to your household bills & mortage when you work part time and have all your own money paid into a personal account?

Same as TrillianAstra. We also have a joint credit card, and go halves on major purchases that can't be covered from the joint account. Savings are separate, but we consult each other before any big purchases as we see the money - even if it's in individual names - as there for the benefit of both of us. When I finish ML and go back part time, I'll contribute pro rata to the joint account.

Works well for us, as DH has his own business and prefers to pay himself the minimum whereas I have a monthly salary.

we have all our wages paid into the main account, then a fixed transfer to an account for food & petrol etc. Plus we both have our own accounts that receive a standing order for personal spending (the same each) We have worked this way since DW finished Uni.

All the money goes into one account and is divided up as required. There is no separate money except the spending, somehow mine seems to go further so I don't begrudge top ups or the occasional personal thing coming out of the joint account. I think it works well as it means we never have to think about who brings in how much, just how much comes in from whatever source and how much goes out.
