All my accounts are just in my name - Mrs (WetAugust). Can I pay this cheque into my account even though it's written out to Mr & Mrs (WetAugust)?
Thnak you

Yes.

No you can't. My husband was given a cheque for Mr and Mrs Dutchman and the bank refused to cash it as we don't have joint accounts. I believe this is a rule all banks have to adhere to. We had to get the cheque re-written.

I share dutchmanswife's experience. Sorry.

You can pay cheques made payable to one party into joint account but not vice versa. Sometimes bank overlook for small amounts but you will need a joint account. Sorry

We had some wedding cheques made out to Mr and Mrs 'him', even though I didn't change my name. I was able to pay them into my own bank account (ie not a joint one)

flowerybeanbag · 18/05/2009 08:46

No, we've had to get people to write new cheques more than once because of this, when we didn't have a joint account.

nickschick · 18/05/2009 08:49

Our bank does.

Well we have a joint account and dh has his own account too (his account is for savings I received a cheque from a comp it was about £50 as it was 'extra' we decided to pay it into our savings - dh forgetting the savings account was in his name paid it in there - they accepted it.

flowerybeanbag · 18/05/2009 09:03

Seems as though you're going to have to go down to the bank and ask them WetAugust. Makes sense that they wouldn't if you think about it though. What if a couple were separated or even divorced? If money was genuinely intended for both parties and one paid it into their own personal account the wishes of the person writing the cheque have not been followed.

WetAugust · 18/05/2009 22:59

Thank you all for responding.

I've sent it back and asked for another in my name only (was from my solicitor so hopefully he'll do it for free)

Should be fine getting a new cheque as long as the money wasn't actually intended for two people not one. I'd be amazed if they did charge you - this is all admin stuff for their accounts people.

notcitrus · 19/05/2009 15:37

I've had a) no problem, b) they will accept it if MrHisName endorses the back of the cheque to say they can pay it to me, and c) have to get a new cheque.

Wouldn't mind except we've had the same two bank accounts all along... solicitors did at least give us a new cheque for free.
